What Do Students Do with ZOOM Recordings , and Does it Affect Attendance in Live Sessions? z May Hanania Yarden Zilberman Hagit Meishar-Tal
Background The shift from traditional face-to-face courses to online formats has become a prevalent trend in academia especially during and after COVID-19 pandemic. Recording online instructional sessions has emerged as a proliferating phenomenon within numerous educational institutions. Some lecturers express their concern that students either don t watch these recordings or watch them instead of attending class.
Research Questions 1 What is the level of usage of Zoom recordings among students? 2 What are the typical usage patterns in viewing recorded lectures? 3 What are the prevalent reasons students use recorded lectures? 4 Which factors predict the frequency of usage of recordings in lectures? 5 What is the correlation between students attendance in synchronous sessions and the extent of usage of Zoom recordings?
Methodology A questionnaire was distributed online via social media platforms and groups of Israeli students who study in higher education institutions during June 2023. 118 Israeli students from various academic institutions filled out the questionnaire 72 females, 45 males ,and 1 unspecified. The age range of the students is between 19-46, with an average age of 25.
Q1: What is the level of usage of Zoom recordings among students? Students watched recorded lectures for approximately half of their learning sessions (M=2.71 SD=1.10 on a 1-5 scale). Average 2.7 Out of 5
Q2: What are the typical usage patterns in viewing recorded lectures? Patterns of usage Patterns of usage 5 4 3.64 3 3.27 3.23 2 2.09 1 0 Revisiting specific segments Skipping sections Pausing to summarize Waching a full recorded session
Q3: What are the prevalent reasons students use recorded lectures? Reason for usage Reason for usage 5 4 3.98 3 3.3 3.26 2.83 2 1 0 Didn't attend live session Didn't understand during live session In preparation for examination To prepare assignments
Q4: Which factors predict the frequency of usage of recordings in lectures? Predictors Predictors B B B E B E t t p p In preparation for the examination 0.216 0.174 0.077 2.246 0.027 0.027 I didn't understand during the live session 0.111 0.085 0.138 1.307 0.194 To prepare assignments 0.333 0.084 0.281 2.764 0.007 0.007 I didn't attend the live session 0.141 0.075 0.163 1.877 0.063
Q5: What is the correlation between students attendance in synchronous sessions and the extent of usage of Zoom recordings? No significant correlation was found between the variable of presence and the extent of usage of recordings.
Conclusions The study shows that although students view recordings as compensation for absence from classes, this is not the sole predictor of their usage Recorded lectures fulfill various purposes for students, extending beyond merely supplementing materials due to absences, and do not adversely affect attendance. Instructors are encouraged to persist in recording lectures, enhancing students' learning experiences beyond scheduled class hours, especially in courses involving exams or assignments.
