In January 2020, NXP presented a document discussing the U-SIG content and EHT-SIG format within the IEEE 802.11-20/0087r0 framework. The document elaborates on the structure and encoding of U-SIG fields, version-dependent and version-independent bits, as well as the EHT-SIG structure for SU/MU transmissions. It also outlines the common and user-specific fields in EHT-SIG content for both SU and MU scenarios.

U-SIG is 2-symbol field modulated on per-20MHz basis. Some U-SIG version-independent bits are decided. EHT-SIG follows U-SIG. Further discuss on the U-SIG content and EHT structure. Version-independent bits: PHY format identifier (3 bits), UL/DL (1 bit), BSS color (TBD bits), TXOP (TBD bits) Submission 3

Rui Cao and etc., NXP January 2020 doc.: IEEE 802.11-20/0087r0 U-SIG Content (2) Version-dependent bits PPDU formats bits: Every generation may define different number of PPDU formats For EHT, we may only need 1 bit EHT SU/MU PPDU: EHT SU/MU can have unified format. EHT TB PPDU EHT-SIG decoding information bits: EHT-SIG can have various MCS and length, depending on PPDU format, number of users, etc. EHT-SIG MCS: e.g. 4 bits Number of EHT-SIG symbols: e.g. 5 bits Submission 4

  5. January 2020 doc.: IEEE 802.11-20/0087r0 EHT-SIG Structure EHT-SIG contains all other PPDU decoding related signaling bits. Unified EHT-SIG structure for SU/MU transmissions. Channel puncturing will be common for EHT, especially for higher BW>160MHz and in 6GHz. There is no clear distinction between SU and MU signaling. For SU or MUMIMO, channel puncturing information will need to be signaled, similar as the resource allocation for OFDMA. EHT-SIG will always exists for SU and MU, there is no preamble structure difference. Differently from 11ax where SU does not have SIGB symbols. Define specific SU preamble does not save much signaling effort, and not able to simplify receiver design. Submission Slide 5 Rui Cao and etc., NXP

  6. January 2020 doc.: IEEE 802.11-20/0087r0 EHT-SIG Content: SU/MU User-specific field Common field EHT-SIG for both SU and MU will consist of Common field and User-specific field. Common field: Contains signaling bits that are common for all users: e.g. RU allocation/puncturing, Number of LTFs, GI+LTF size, etc. User-specific field: Contains signaling bits that are specific for each user: e.g. STA_ID, per-user MCS, coding, Nsts, etc. Submission Slide 6 Rui Cao and etc., NXP

January 2020 doc.: IEEE 802.11-20/0087r0 Summary U-SIG version-dependent field can includes: PPDU format bits, and EHT-SIG decoding related information: MCS, number of symbols, etc. EHT-SIG uses unified structure for SU and MU.
