LAMIA / lamia/ Lamia is the capital of the regional unit of Fthiotida. It is situated in the centre of Greece. It is built in the place of the ancient town of Lamia on the southern slopes of the mountain Orthis and near the river Spercheios. It is located 215 km NW of Athens and 302 Km of Thessaloniki. 9
The city dates back to antiquity. It is said that it was named after the daughter of Poseidon ( the God of the Sea). 10
Greece was under Turkish rule for 400 years. During that period it was called Zetounion . 11
Lamia played an important role in the 1821 Revolution. The city was liberated in 1832 and recuperated the name Lamia . 12
