DANCE

Dance is very important to me because I’ve
been dancing my whole life. It’s my passion and
it always makes me feel better when I’m sad. I
love it because I’m able to express myself
through movement. Whatever happens in the
future for me, I’m never going to stop doing it.
Even if I just dance around my house, it doesn’t
matter. Although I wish I could, I’m probably
never going to become a popular, famous
dancer. But that’s okay because I don’t care
about being the best. I care about doing what I
love and making people smile when I dance for
them. I love dancing for others and watching
them smile, knowing that I’ve brightened their
day. Or when I’m doing a dance with a message,
and seeing people cry, knowing that I’ve made
them think and spread a message. For all I
know, dance will always be there for me.

WHEN DID I START DANCE?

I first started dance when I was 3 years old. My mom decided to put me in a ballet class
to see if I liked it. She thought I would enjoy it since I was always dancing around the
house. Sure enough, I loved it. I still remember many details of dance classes I took
when I was really young. For example I remember I used to wear a tutu to ballet class
that had roses on it and during class I’d love touching the roses because they were
velvet I loved the feeling of them. The first few years that I did dance I only took ballet
because I was scared to try the other kinds of dances and I preferred to stick to only
ballet. Then later on, I decided I was going to try other dances as well. Turns out, it
wasn’t only ballet that I loved, I loved all dances in general! Every year I would take
more and more classes and different types of dances. Then we have where I am today.

RECENT DANCE

Today, I dance around 30 hours a week. People think
I’m crazy, but I don’t think I am. I may as well use my
time doing something that I love everyday and get as
much practice as I can and improve more and more,
rather than spend my time doing something I’m not
passionate about. I leave school early everyday,
during block D to go to dance class. It’s a program
called EPIC (elite performers in Coquitlam). So every
day I end up dancing 2:00-8:30 but with some breaks
in between of course. The first thing people ask me
when I tell them this is how I manage to keep up with
school. I honestly don’t find it too hard. I usually do
most of my homework on my breaks at dance and
then finish when I get home. For example, I’m at
dance writing this right now! I also get extremely
hungry with all the dancing, and I don’t even love
eating that much but after a long day of dance I love
coming home to tasty, cheesy, creamy macaroni and
cheese and a nice cold sweet fruit smoothie.

IN THE FUTURE

I don’t know exactly what my plans are for the
future, but I know that it will involve me still
dancing. I know it’s basically impossible for me
to become a professional dancer, but I would
love to become a dance teacher. I know what
teaching dance is like because I help teach 2
classes a week. I teach a 3-4 year old ballet
class and a 5-6 year old jazz class. I really enjoy
doing it so I’d love to do that when I’m older. I
also think it would be really fun to dance on
cruise ships. I've been on cruise ships before
where I have seen dance shows and I think I
would really like it because I would be able to
dance and travel new places at the same time! I
also love that smell of the ocean. Most people
hate it but

I love the breezy, salty smell.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Throughout the years of me dancing, I’ve
accomplished many things. Three years ago, I won a
scholarship that was worth $300 for me to attend a
dance camp for a week. They chose around 5 people
from my studio and I was one of them. Then, the
following year I won a scholarship called “I believe in
me”. It paid for my solo that year which ended up
being a total of $1000. It was from anonymous so I
don’t know who gave it to me but they chose 2
people from my studio and I was so incredibly
thankful when I received it. When they called my
name I thought I was going crazy and I was hearing
something else, but I wasn’t. Then, last year I was
given an award for being the most dedicated dancer,
and I was given the “I believe in me scholarship”
again, so my solo was paid for again this year. I’ve
also received many awards and trophies for my solos,
and group dances throughout the years. I’m very
thankful to have given these opportunities and they
have all helped me grow as a dancer.
