The Hangaza tribe are a Bantu speaking people who are closely
related to the Warundi of Burundi. They hail from the Kagera
region in Ngara District in the North Western part of Tanzania.

A common practice of the Hangaza,is women resuming to their
responsibilities shortly after giving birth.
It is expected that soon after the dropping off of the remains of
the umbilical cord, the woman is ready to get back to her
ordinary duties irrespective of her health condition. This takes an
average of three to five days after delivery. However, this does
not take into account the health status of the woman, but the
status of the baby.

Cont…

They literally tie the baby at their backs and work as usual.
With this background, I tell the story of two woman,Juliet
Paschal commonly referred to as Mama Pita and Mama
Arnold, a mother of two, who are currently undergoing
through the experience together with Ms.Takhiya Issa whom
has passed through the same challenge.

According to health specialist whom I interviewed while
researching on the theme, based on the program above, a
woman ordinarily ought to take an average of six weeks
before she can resume her chores. But this has not been the
case.

Cont…

I am motivated by the influence I have as a
community journalist to create awareness to the
Hangaza people over this ordeal.Using the Radio as
a media of communication commonly used in the
Region, I believe it will enlighten them and
eventually result on creating a change on how
women are treated. This is a good example of a
gender sensitivity because it challenges directly the
indifference of the community to the plight of the
women.

Cont…

Because it create awareness and insight into the
state of the other sex, with reference to historical
roots of sexist stereotyping, discrimination and
violence and also Ensure universal access to
sexual and reproductive health and reproductive
rights as agreed in accordance with the
Programme of Action of the International
Conference on Population and Development and
the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome
documents of their review conferences.

The key objective is to combat inhumanity experienced
by women in two ways: the people met directly in
making the program, and the reflection that occurs
among the members of the community after airing of
the program. In meeting various stakeholders,
discussion take place, for example, elders talk about
their part in upholding their cultural practices, the elite
in the community who make various efforts to change
the state of affairs, like teachers who tell what efforts
they are making to educate future generations; and the
affected women who speak of their incapacity to
change their status quo, among others.

Cont.

How have you integrated the SDGs into the
story effectively?
Ans:
I have target
sexual and reproductive health and
reproductive rights as agreed as Action of the
International Conference in Beijing.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Who did you hope to reach? What impact did it
have? What evidence do you have to illustrate
impact?
Ans.
The most important group of people are the
decision makers in the community. They vary
from elders who guard their cultural practices.

Cont…

I also intended to reach out to those who can make an
impact in the community like educators, because they
have direct contact in the community and it is through
them that dialogue is spearheaded.
Educators like teachers are able to directly influence the
decisions of young people who will be making decision in
future.
I have reached out to a big percentage of my intended
audience and they have given positive feedback through
their responses we received upon airing this program.

PROCESS/METHODOLOGY

How did you gather data? How many female and
male sources did you consult? Why did you choose
these sources? Why were their voices important?
Ans.
The data comes first from my own experience in the
community. I also referred to a report by Association of
Female Journalists in Tanzania (TAMWA), 2012, about
Gender violence in mainland Tanzania, in its five year
Strategic Plan of 2000-2014 I also interviewed health
practitioners specialized in women affairs to investigate
the consequences of the issue.

IMPACT

What impact did you achieve through your story
How did you use social media to maximise impact of
your story. Give evidence.
Ans.
The program had a positive impact in many ways.To
begin with, the cases are few and if they are being done
secretly compared to before.
Secondly, the villagers are being educated in meeting
places within the village.

FOLLOW UP

How would/did you conduct follow up to your story
after it has/was been published?.
Ans.
I will investigate other women in similar situation in the
same region to see if any tangible change has
happened.
Necessarily airing out the case will not fully result into
an immediate change , hence a follow up helps is very
fundamental.

In the attached program,the community
development officer made a plea to village
leaders to use the village forums and common
meeting places to enlighten about the issue of
gender abuse particularly on women
I will make a follow over the same because it can
be the major source of change.
