  11. How does Russell use the characters of Mickey and Eddie in Blood Brothers to explore ideas about Fate? Russell uses the character of Mickey to present the idea that fate is decided by your class and social situation. He does this with Mickey s seemingly inevitable decent into madness and addiction towards the end of the play, That s why I take them, so I can be invisible. Russell uses the metaphor invisible to emphasise that Mickey feels worthless and wants to hide away because of his shame. He has accepted his fate as an unemployed lower class male, with the character being Russell s depiction of the thousands of unemployed young men that populated Britain in the 1980s due to the closure of industry. Mickey is fully aware that class has controlled his fate, Why didn t you give me away! The exclamation suggesting Mickey s anger at being trapped by his class unlike his brother and wishing he had the same opportunities. The reader will sympathise with Mickey who has had a difficult life, but they may also question why the character doesn t have more courage to break out of his class. Russell uses the character successfully to develop the idea that a person s fate is decided by many other factors, including class.

  13. The Health Food Diner In The Health Food Diner, how does the poet present ideas about food? No sprouted wheat and soya shoots And Brussels in a cake, Carrot straw and spinach raw, (Today, I need a steak). Not thick brown rice and rice pilaw Or mushrooms creamed on toast, Turnips mashed and parsnips hashed, (I'm dreaming of a roast). Health-food folks around the world Are thinned by anxious zeal, They look for help in seafood kelp (I count on breaded veal). No smoking signs, raw mustard greens, Zucchini by the ton, Uncooked kale and bodies frail Are sure to make me run to Loins of pork and chicken thighs And standing rib, so prime, Pork chops brown and fresh ground round (I crave them all the time). 5 Minute Essay Plan Ideas MITSL Quotes Evaluation Irish stews and boiled corned beef and hot dogs by the scores, or any place that saves a space For smoking carnivores.
