Learning Intentions In this lesson you will be learning: The names of the books in the New Testament and what can be found in the different books . The Gospels tell the story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The Acts of the Apostles tells the story of the first people to belong to the Church. St Paul, St Peter and others wrote the Letters in the New Testament to encourage new Christians in their faith. The last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation, contains prophecies and visions about the end of the world. 2
The New Testament The New Testament contains twenty-seven books. It tells the story of how God sent his Son Jesus into the world as a human being. It records Jesus words and actions, and the events of his daily life as he went about preaching and teaching about God and the Kingdom of God. It also tells us about the first followers of Jesus, who were the first members of the early Church. The New Testament contains the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of the early leaders of the Church, and the Book of Revelation. 3
The Books of the New Testament The Books of the New Testament The first four books in the New Testament are called the Gospels. The word Gospel comes from a Greek word meaning good news . The Gospels tell us the Good News of Jesus life, death and resurrection. They also tell us about the earliest followers of Jesus. The Gospels were written by Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, who are known as the Evangelists. The book known as the Acts of the Apostles tells us about the Apostles and the other early followers of Jesus (disciples) and how they continued to spread the message of Jesus when he was no longer with them. They include, for example, Peter, the apostle and first Pope, and Paul, one of the early converts to Christianity and the first great Christian missionary. 4
The Books of the New Testament (continued) The Books of the New Testament (continued) Most of the rest of the New Testament is made up of letters by St Paul and other leaders of the early Church to the various Christian communities. These letters explained the message of Jesus to the early followers and helped them to understand what it meant to live as a friend and follower of Jesus. These letters also offered them hope and encouragement in difficult times. The last book of the New Testament, known as the Book ofRevelation, contains many prophecies (predictions or revelations about what will happen in the future) about the world and its end. This book is also known as the Apocalypse. It is a strange and mysterious book. It uses many unusual images to tell about the end of the world and about Jesus victory over sin and evil. 5
A time to pray Sign of the Cross Teacher Let us settle ourselves now and become quiet and still. (Pause) We close our eyes and become aware of our breathing. (Pause) Today we will silently pray these words: You are my child; live in my love. Imagine that God is speaking directly to you in this prayer. (Pause) On the in-breath, we will silently pray: You are my child . On the out-breath, we will silently pray: live in my love. (repeat x 5) When you are ready, say a quiet word of thanks to God. (Pause) Then open your eyes once more and stretch. Feel the energy of life that God gives to you. Sign of the Cross 6
