  2. Look at front cover of the book What do you think this story is going to be about? How can you tell? What is the genre of the book? Read the introduction about the author.

  3. Preface-Tell me your story Use inference and deduction to answer the following: 1.Who do we think this is? 2.When and where do you think this story is taking place. This story its a flashback. What does this mean and how do we know it is? 3.Who is telling the story? Why?

  4. Chapter 1 The shilling pie What does the chapter heading show us about the era of the story? Read chap 1 What have we found out so far about the family? Make notes with a partner. RE-Read from the pie has grown cold. How did Jim feel whenhe brought the pie home? What could Jim hear? How must he have been feeling? Why did the pie go cold? Write some sentences using emotive vocab.

  5. Chapter 2 The Stick man What is happening in this chapter. Is Mr Spink right to make the family leave? Give for and against reasons. Freeze frame a scene and give it a title. Show each persons expression. Eg. No rent no room or Sitck man arrives. Why did they have to leave their cottage? What could the family do next? Write ideas on mini WB. Continued ..

  6. Chapter 2 continued Put these events in order of their importance of suspense and explain why. A. Mr Spink removes blanket from mother. B. Family pack up and leave with belongings. C. Rapping of cane outside the room D. Jim goes to pick up money purse E. The children stand in front of mother while Mr Spink peers over wondering if she s dead. F. Mr Spink sees empty pie wrapping. G. Jim takes responsibility for buying pie. H. Jims mother asks for more time to pay rent.

  7. Chapter 3 Rosie and Judd Why did Jim s mother leave her daughters at the house? Write an imaginary conversation between the two girls about being left there by their mother. What would be their worries for themselves? How would they react to their brother and mother going?

  8. Chapter 4 The work house Read pg 37-40 stopping after Matron tells Jim to get in. What impression has the author given us of the workhouse so far? Look at clip of workhouse. Write down as many adjectives and descriptive phrases that you can think of . Continue reading. What is Jim s fate now?

  9. Chapter 5 Behind bars Compare life in the workhouse to what a home should consist of. Write two columns home workhouse And list the opposites. Write a diary entry about work in the work house for Jim.

  10. Chapter 6 Tip Read first paragraph. How does the author make Tip stand out as a character? Read scene where Tip takes punishment. Why do you think Tip took the punishment for Jim? Why is Tip important to the story?

  11. Chapter 7 The wild thing Read chap 7. Why should Jim stay or escape? List reasons to stay Write a persuasive letter to Jim to persuade him to escape or stay and why. Consider other characters and their importance to Jim s decision. ()use connectives eg. Moreover, therefore consequently escape

  12. Chapter 8 Carpet beaters Debate whether Jim was right to leave the work house. Write I think you were right to try to escape the workhouse because however if you do leave Close your eyes whilst I read the last paragraph of chapter 8.Visualise the scene. Which words/phrases helped you picture what is happening? Draw picture of Jim escaping and annotate him with words from above his feelings and what he could see and hear.
