  4. Last lesson we read, studied and explored the performance aspect of the prologue. In this lesson we are going to start exploring Act 1. An Act in a play is a section of a play and is a bit like a chapter in a book. Each scene in a performance piece always starts with the stage directions. Stage directions are instructions in a play for the technical aspects of the production, such as lighting, sound, costume, scenery or props and, most importantly, the movement of actors on stage. When we think about finding the LITERAL MEANING of a text, we think about it in its most basic and most factual sense. It is simply looking at what the text actually says (what we can SEE). This piece of punctuation signals to the reader that you have lifted something from a text you have read.
