MH101 BA Arts Media & Cultural Studies
What is Media & Cultural Studies? Media & Cultural Studies critically examines media and popular culture texts, practices and institutions to understand their role in how we live, what we do, and why we think the way we do. We focus on products from all kinds of media and cultural industries, ranging from old media to Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Netflix, and games. We also explore what audiences, users, and communities understand about and do with these media forms.
First Year 15 credits in first year Foundation for thinking critically about the nexus between media, popular culture and society Combine with three other subjects (45 credits) Valuable combinations include Sociology, Business, Marketing, Anthropology, and English Begin in MH109 Media Studies, change to Arts in second year (M&CS and 1 subject; other two subjects) May take Critical Skills, including Digital Critical Skills
Digital Critical Skills Practical, hands-on digital skills MD190 Digital Creation Skills Basics of coding, image and audio editing and digital storytelling MD191 Digital Literacy Understanding of technology, data management, usability, digital rights
Second Year Media & Cultural Studies research practices and optional modules One additional subject in Second Year Choose Double Honours (30/30) or Minor (20/40) Possibility of pursuing a 10 credit elective stream to broaden intellectual horizons
