  1. Have YOU got the Power? Year 6

  2. History Over the course of this topic, the children will compare similarities, differences and changes across and within the lives of people in the past and modern day. The lives of some powerful women, who made changes that have affected our modern day living, will be explored during this half term and we will put ourselves into their shoes to imagine how they must have felt during their time. Children will bring together the knowledge they have learned about specific powerful women, in order to develop their own project outlining the significance of their achievements and legacies.   3. Art Children will explore and discuss the work of Banksy before using their sketchbook to plan and create their own drawing in his style. This will have a powerful message symbolising something they are passionate about. Children will recreate a 3D model from a 2D picture of their choice, choosing an appropriate medium. Children will revisit sewing and stitching techniques taught in Y4 and Y5 and use this to sew a picture of their choice. Children will use Dali as inspiration to explore primary, secondary and tertiary colours in order to create a final piece. Children will build upon their pre-existing skills and techniques in order to draw a portrait of one of the powerful women we will be studying in topic.

  4. Design Technology Children will have the opportunity to design, develop, make and evaluate their own electrical toy which could be purchased for young children as a Christmas present. Children will need to use their understanding of: appropriate lists of tools, equipment and materials that they need for the task, they will explain their choice of tools and equipment in relation to the skills and techniques they will be using and formulate step-by-step plans as a guide to making.

  5. Physical Education This half term s PE will be focussed on dance. Over the topic, children will learn and develop their own powerful dance. Children will work as both a group and as an individual to focus on coordination, balancing, mirroring and movement. Religious Education Children will begin to understand the purpose of a community for each rite of passage and be able to use key vocabulary. Children will suggest why all cultures have rites of passage. Children will be able to offer a view as to the reason why all cultures mark the same stages in life. Music Children will begin by improvising using five or more notes to compose and perform melodies. They will use a variety of different musical devices including melody, rhythms, and chords to create their own powerful music and sounds to fit certain real life situations.

  6. Geography Children will use the eight points of a compass, four and six-grid references, symbols and keys to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world. Children will be given the opportunity to use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in our local area. From this, they will plan and carry out a fieldwork investigation in an urban area or a rural area using appropriate techniques. Children will plan a powerful enquiry to investigate how sustainable one aspect of the school s work is (E.g. Eco area). They will collect evidence from surveys, photographs and interviews, and present findings to the head teacher.

  7. Science Children will learn about electricity. They will identify the components needed to create an electrical circuit and work scientifically, as part of a team, to create a range of complex circuits.   8. Relationships and Health Education Children will continue to learn about the different feelings and emotions that they can experience and will begin to build up some strategies for managing these. Children will learn the difference between physical and mental wellbeing and methods of support for if we need it. French Children will continue to develop their French vocabulary and having conversations with with others.

  9. Reading Bespoke Book Reading regularly at school and home is essential to children s language development. It increases their vocabulary and develops their understanding of age-related texts. This half term s Bespoke Book is Matilda In school, children will use Reading Plus at least three times per week and as a result, they will be exposed to a vast range of texts across a vast range of genres. Whilst they will have regular reading sessions in school, children will also benefit further by sharing and discussing texts at home. To support your child, you should encourage them to access Reading Plus at home and read at least three times per week.   10. English Children will examine the literary features and structures of descriptive writing, biographies and survival guides. By the end of the half term, children will have written in each of these styles of writing with links to our Have YOU got the power? topic, carefully choosing appropriate vocabulary, sentence structures and literary devices. Spelling at Home In school, your children will focus on spelling rules and applying this within their writing. At home, children would benefit from regular practise of Y6 common exception words, which can be found in their Reading Diary.

  11. Maths Children will continue developing their knowledge of number, statistics, geometry and measure. They will solve problems, reason and investigate how they can apply their knowledge to a variety of contexts including topic-based activities and everyday life. Maths at Home In order to support your child with their learning, it would be helpful if you could: Ask them multiplication table questions (just one table a night) e.g. focus on the 8x table on Monday and as questions such as 8 x 3 and 24 divided by 8 Discuss the time during the day using both digital and analogue clocks Involve them when cooking, asking them to weigh ingredients and discussing the measurements
