ANATOMY OF GREY PP BY BLAKE POWERS PLAY BY JIM LEONARD JR
JIM LEONARD JR Born in 1957, Leonard believed he would be lawyer until he found a love of theater and dramatic play writing. The plays "The Diviners", "And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson", and " Crow and Weasel" where awarded Tony's while sadly "Anatomy of Grey" was not.
SETTING AND TITLE Setting :A small town of Grey, Indiana in the 1880's. It is often described as a bland farming town with a low number of residences. Significance of the title: The title is meant to represent the towns physical and emotional damage that is believed to be almost impossible to fix through June s eyes.
CHARACTERS 1. June Muldoon: 15-year-old born in Grey, Indiana. Only daughter of Rebekah (that she knows about) wanting change, adventure, and the affection of Galen. She was Galen's assistant and trusted though out the town. She is one of the three to leave Grey and start a new life without disease but also the ones she loves. 2. Galen P Grey: Traveling doctor whom fell from a hot air balloon just outside of Grey, Indiana. Has a cronic fear of blood and germs. He is deeply in love with Rebekah and the first one to be told that she is pregnant. He is told to abort her child but refuses because of his personal values and love of her. 3. Rebekah Muldoon: The mother of June. An only mother due to the recent death of her husband at the beginning of the play. Pregnant with a child she doesn't want. Galen is the only person who knows she is pregnant. She has deep affection for Galen and her daughter. 4. Homer: 17-year-old farmer boy with a huge crush on June. He loves soda and will only drink soda. 5. Phineas Wingfield: The town preacher and all-knowing holy man who basically leads the town. Didn't trust Grey until he relieved his kidney stones. 6. Tiny Wingfield: The towns spinster and wife of Phineas.
FOLKS TO FIX MEALSAND THRASHERSAND FOLKS TO SAVE SOULS-BUT THE ONE THING WE LACKED IN OUR TOWN WAS APERSON TO FIX OTHER PEOPLE June This quote sums up what people were like in the town and June's want of a glance of hope though her recent tragedy.
THEMES 1. Greif: In the play with June's loss of her father, and others who suffered from the disease that stuck the town. 2. Destiny: Good and bad people where all effected. Some believed there must have been a reason but that s up to personal interpretation. 3. Love: Love in the play gives hope and also devastates all who inhabit Grey. In the end it is understood that the ones you care about will keep you happy knowing that they live happy.
PROTAGONIST AND ANTAGONIST Protagonist: June Muldoon- The entire story is her reciting what happened when she lived in Grey, Indiana. Also the world seems to revolve around her in the play. For example, she is the one who prayed for a doctor and Grey came. She wanted excitement in her life and disease struck her town. June was also the one of the few to survive and leave Grey with her mothers newborn and Homer to start a new life. Antagonist: Fate- In the play; bad things happen to good people and they don't know why. From June's father to the dilemma with Rebekah over her child. Bad things happen but they give more value to the good moments.
SUMMARY The play starts with June losing her father because no one in the town knows any way to help. So after the event she wrote a note to god wishing for a man to cure illness and emotional dismay. Soon after a twister came bringing a mysterious man in a hot air balloon who is ironically called Grey. After saving June the moment he entered the town; Grey went around helping those in need with methods that is alien to them. Phineas went to inspect him believing he was a pervert using this persona to his advantage, but started to trust him after he helped stop his pain that was caused by kidney stones. Rebeca, the women for Galen's affection only grows asks him for an abortion which he denies. To make things worse an unknown disease struck leaving marks on the necks of whom where unfortunate enough to catch it and the women that he loves daughter is in love with him. On top of that some start to blame Galen again because of the timing of his appearance. June and Phineas protected his name but they where no closer to finding a cure. With much soul searching and the birth of Rebeca's child. They sent June, Homer and the newborn baby and sent out of town by sea. Grey relives upon them leaving that this unknown illness is caused by unsafe drinking water because June drank only boiled water and Homer only drinks soda. June wrote of her experience to tell her child what happened.
CENTRAL CONFLICT The main conflict of the play is through those trying to find happiness and meaning in their life. If it is health. Religion, family, adventure, or all the above. We may not all search but we all want to find something. In the play they use it to try to fill the void of emotional devastation. From death, life changing chooses, and the fear of the unknown.
MY THOUGHTS I loved Anatomy of Grey it is very touching and deep story that delves into what we all feel. It shows how life isn't going to give you any handouts but that s what makes the happy moments more meaningful. We all ponder what could be and what might have been instead of trying even if we know we will fail. It is the connection represented by a small town that shows that your friends are you family and every moment should be cherished. Not because it may be there last but to show them that you love them.
