The UK What do we mean by the UK? The UK is made up of 4 countries. England. Scotland. Wales. Northern Ireland.
The British Isles What do we mean by the British Isles? The British Isles is made up of 5 countries: England. Scotland. Wales. Northern Ireland. Republic of Ireland. About 5 thousand small islands.
Great Britain What do we mean by Great Britain? Great Britain is made up of 3 countries: England. Scotland. Wales.

The UK - Cities Definition of a City: A city is an area with large numbers of people. Cities provide a very wide range of functions including more specialised functions such as universities, large hospitals and sports stadiums. Quick fact: The Queen decides which places are cities, based on a number of different factors including the size of population.
The UK - Cities Capital cities: London is the capital city of England. Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland. Cardiff is the capital city of Wales.
Your Tasks On your map of the British Isles (on Showbie), label the countries and their capital cities. Can you locate where you live? Can you name any other cities or places? Write a paragraph, using full sentences, explaining what the differences are between the UK, the British Isles and Great Britain. *(Go onto the next slide for a challenge)*
