  3. Main activities of the European Doctoral School and the Network I. An annual Summer School based in Mytilene (Lesbos, Greece) for 25 doctoral students from the GovUnet Institutions (https://govart2016.pns.aegean.gr/govart2016-home) and others universities. II. An annual Winter School based at University of Luxembourg, campus Limperstberg. Organization of Research Seminars and Workshops on Governance, Pluralism and Trans-nationalisation in Europe on an annual basis for doctoral and graduate students, focusing on the promotion and strengthening of European governance (integration at local, national, European and international level). III. Creation of an electronic platform (e-platform) to exploit the material produced by the multiple activities of the Doctoral School/Network, disseminate results and support their operation with potential partnerships IV. Exchange of professors with specialization in European Studies with the aim of improving the quality of professional training among the participating universities V. Organization of two international conferences and proceedings presenting the research conducted by participating scholars and institutions; contributing to the spreading of values of European Studies to local communities in order to create an added value for the scientific approach of the European Idea. VI. Publication of papers and articles in specialized journals and websites so as to promote dialogue and scientific thought on European Governance issues.

Research themes of the European Doctoral School and the Network The executive, legislative and judicial process (Governance) The School/Network transformation function of democracy in relation to the concepts and practices that determine governance, pluralization, and trans-nationalization within Europe. The aim is to contextually explore and critically assess contemporary policy and decision-making trends and their impact both at European and domestic level. European Doctoral analyses the the of political The economic political and social inter- dependency between the European nation- states and the process of their normative integration (Trans- Nationalization) The organizing and restructuring of the developing social heterogeneity (Pluralism) agendas

  5. European Doctoral School Number and justification of scholarships 2 half scholarships. Our Doctoral School benefits from partnerships with public institutions in Luxembourg (including the Research Chair on Parliamentary Studies) which partially fund 2 PhD scholarships. Thus, we are requesting 2 partial scholarships to match those funds. 50% of PhD supervisions in co-tutelle with the partner universities of European Governance Universities Network- Jean Monnet Action 10 full scholarships All members of the European Doctoral School are eligible for supervising at least one doctoral student for three years (+1 year) in accordance with the rules of the UL and the universities member of European Governance Universities Network- Jean Monnet Action 5 theses by axis (Governance, Pluralism, Trans- Nationalization).

Procedures for a successful recruitment and supervision of candidates with a strong interdisciplinary potential The supervision is the responsibility of the main supervisor, who meets on a regular basis (at least once a month) with the PhD Candidate. Each PhD Candidate, with the supervision board, has to compose his/her own portfolio of mandatory courses (methodological courses in the existing doctoral education at the University of Luxembourg, European Governance Universities Network- Jean Monnet Action, and optional courses (ECPR, IPSA, etc.) The admission committee is composed by three members of the Doctoral School (including the supervisor). International Calls Conforming to the Gender Equality Policies in Public Research of the European Commission and Luxembourgish law, the goal is to obtain at least 40% of women Ph.D. Candidates. (e.g. jobs.ac.uk, academics.de, ECPR, IPSA, etc.) will be organized in March for a competitive recruitment of the PhD students (effective in September) The supervisor and two other scientific advisors (internal or external to the UL- at least one from another discipline) form a supervision board which meets at least once a year with the PhD Candidate in order to monitor his/her progress and offer guidance. A third member in case of joint supervision with one of the partner universities and/or, compulsorily from an other discipline.

Added value of partners European Doctoral School & European Governance Universities Network- The partners will offer: Joint supervision and acceptance of PhD researchers of this Network in their respective doctoral programs on a basis that corresponds with the research objectives of the Network following the establishment of a common selection committee; Joint supervisory committees and defense juries for each PhD student following an agreement that fixes: i) the credits to be obtained, ii) the courses and seminars to be followed depending on the subject and the needs of the doctoral student, iii) the time spent between two or three institutions; Exchange conventions of professors and researchers allowing for stays of a maximum of three months for purposes of joint organization and facilitation of doctoral and research seminars in our respective institutions; Share the responsibility for organizing and editing English and French scientific publications comprising work of the PhD Candidates. Share the organization of the Summer Schools and Research Seminar. The opportunity to profit from online courses of the new Jean Monnet networking on European Governance. European Governance Universities Network- Goals of the Summer School (6 credits) The Summer School will equip the student with all the essential skills required for a research and professional career. It will contribute significantly to the existing scientific knowledge and understanding, and, thus, to the capital of socio-political intelligence required for addressing one of the most pressing governmental issues that pluralist societies regularly face within contexts of trans-national governmental systems. Target Audience: 25 students (PhD's and 2nd year of their Master s) in Law, International Relations, Philosophy, History, Political Science, Sociology or a cognate subject. (average mark of 14/20). A summer school for 3 consecutive years at the University of the Aegean. Second and third week of July. Official languages: English & French. 250 euros which includes accommodation in the University residence hall, the registration fees and the brunch at the university In order to recruit the best candidates outside the Network, the summer school will be advertised widely in a call for applications, that will be distributed via the summer school website and a range of major social sciences- websites and newsletters in the field (e.g. jobs.ac.uk, academics.de, ECPR, IPSA, etc.).
