Essentials of Helping in Counseling
Gerard Egan emphasizes two primary goals in helping: managing specific problems and developing overall problem-solving abilities in clients. Helpers should aim to be caring, committed, and wise, emphasizing compassion and building authentic relationships. Caring involves both sympathy and active listening, leading to a reciprocal relationship benefiting both carer and cared-for.
