Skill Development The Fantastic Five The Fantastic Five Pivot Coach Education Pass Dribble Shoot Guard your man Incorporate 2-3 drills for each in every session Get more drill out of each drill Get more practice out of practice Combine skills in each drill Use game sense teaching drill 1 v 0, build to 1 v 1(let them play & learn through exploration) Move quickly from drill to drill o o o o o o

Teaching Concept through Game sense Small-sided games let young players explore through doing 1 v 1 play key to developing skill on both sides of the ball 2 v 2 can players create for themselves and someone else 3 v 3 all aspects can be taught in this setting Awareness of spacing creating space, recognising space, maintaining space Balance between controlled environment & freelance

Organising a training session Have a plan Use the score-clock where possible Limit drills to 6-8 minutes keep the session moving More balls, less lines Add teaching points have 3 points of emphasis for each drill Include some fun games & activities Be prepared to move on avoid getting stuck on one drill or concept Let them play

  5. Safe coaching principles Inspect playing area & surrounds prior to the session for obstacles or unsafe surfaces Schedule in appropriate drink and rest breaks Supervise young players at all times Provide safe instruction Use appropriate language and tone when communicating Keep physical contact with athletes to an absolute minimum Be inclusive in all drills & activities involve the whole group For more information on coaching basketball, contact Basketball Western Australia
