Essential and Applied Subjects at Lowood SHS
Applied subjects at Lowood State High School are ideal for students interested in vocational pathways post-secondary schooling. These subjects lead to vocational education or work opportunities, with outcomes contributing to the QCE. Students are encouraged to have foundational skills and community connections before enrolling in Applied subjects. The curriculum includes Industry Practices, Production Processes, Fitting and Machining, Welding, and Fabrication. Engineering Skills Applied Subject
Essential and Applied Subjects Essential and Applied Subjects Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work. Results in Applied subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and one Applied subject result may contribute to an ATAR. At Lowood SHS we do not recommend students wishing to undertake an ATAR enter an Applied subject. Students will need solid foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, applied learning, community connections and core skills for work from which to work in an Applied subject.
Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to have studied Manual Arts in previous years? No. It is certainly an advantage but, all levels of experience are catered for in this subject. More importantly, students need to have a safe approach to their learning and are willing to have a go.
Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions Do I get to take home what I make? Yes. If all school fees have been paid and the I individual student project has been marked, students may take their work home.
Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions What kinds of stuff will I learn in Engineering Skills? The core units of Engineering Skills are Industry Practices, Production Processes, Fitting and Machining, Welding and Fabrication. Whilst studying these units students will learn about and practice general workshop safety, Oxy/Acetylene welding, MMAW (Stick) welding, GMAW(MIG)welding, machining practices (lathe and milling machine), plan reading and interpretation, plus many more useful metal trade related skills.
