Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills: A Practical Scenario Analysis
Critical thinking is a cognitive skill vital for evaluating information objectively, as demonstrated through a scenario where fear of dogs is analyzed using critical thinking principles. By reflecting, synthesizing, and evaluating information, individuals can overcome biases and make informed decisions, leading to positive outcomes.

Critical thinking WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING? CRITICAL THINKING IS THINKING ABOUT THINGS IN A WAY THAT IS OPEN-MINDED, REFLECTIVE, ACCURATE, INQUIRING, REASONABLE AND RESPONSIBLE. THE AIM OF CRITICAL THINKING IS TO LEARN THE TRUTH. PEOPLE ARE NOT BORN WITH THE SKILL OF CRITICAL THINKING, THEY MUST LEARN TO DO IT: TEACHERS MUST TEACH LEARNERS HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY. CRITICAL THINKING CAN ALSO BE CREATIVE THINKING. CRITICAL THINKING ENCOURAGES ONE TO ANALYSE, SYNTHESISE AND EVALUATE INFORMATION. THINK ABOUT THE HIGHER LEVELS OF BLOOM S TAXONOMY CRITICAL THINKING ENGAGES THE THINKER AT THE HIGHER LEVELS OF BLOOM S TAXONOMY. AT THE LOWER LEVELS LOWER-ORDER THOUGHT PROCESSES ARE REQUIRED, ACCEPTING AND UNDERSTANDING INFORMATION AS IT IS PRESENTED.
Critical thinking SCENARIO: (BEFORE COVID!) SUPPOSE YOU WERE BITTEN BY A DOG WHEN WALKING DOWN THE STREET WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD. THE OWNER OF THE DOG HADN T SOCIALISED THE DOG PROPERLY WHEN IT WAS A PUPPY, WHICH MADE THE DOG AGGRESSIVE. THE OWNER OF THE DOG, DIDN T KEEP THE DOG ON A LEASH. THE INCIDENT MADE YOU AFRAID OF DOGS, AND RELUCTANT TO WALK IN THE STREET IN CASE YOU ENCOUNTERED ANOTHER AGGRESSIVE DOG. SUPPOSE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS, WHO OWNS A DOG, INVITES YOU TO VISIT. THE DOG IS WELL- BEHAVED AND NOT AGGRESSIVE AT ALL. BUT THE MINUTE YOU HEAR ABOUT THE DOG, YOU DON T WANT TO GO, BECAUSE YOU DON T WANT TO BE BITTEN BY A DOG AGAIN. SO, YOU DON T VISIT YOUR FRIEND. USE CRITICAL THINKING TO ANALYSE THE SITUATION, BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO VISIT YOUR FRIEND, OR NOT TO VISIT YOUR FRIEND. USE ALL THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR DECISION. EXPLAIN YOUR CRITICAL THOUGHT PROCESS AND THE OUTCOME OF YOUR THINKING.
Critical thinking WHEN USING CRITICAL THINKING, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO REFLECT ON YOUR EXPERIENCES OBJECTIVELY. YOU WILL ANALYSE YOUR REASONS FOR DISLIKING WALKING IN THE STREET AND REALISE YOU DISLIKE DOGS, NOT GOING TO FRIENDS, AND THAT YOU SHOULD DISLIKE AGGRESSIVE DOGS, AND NOT ALL DOGS ARE AGGRESSIVE. YOU WILL SYNTHESISE THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION, NAMELY THAT YOUR FRIEND IS A RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER WHO HAS SOCIALISED HER DOG PROPERLY AND THAT A VISIT TO YOUR FRIEND WILL BE ENJOYABLE. YOU WILL EVALUATE THE INFORMATION, AND DRAW THE CONCLUSION THAT THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR, AND THAT YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD TIME AT YOUR FRIEND. YOUR THINKING WILL AFFECT YOUR ACTIONS, BECAUSE INSTEAD OF STAYING AT HOME, YOU WILL VISIT YOUR FRIEND AND ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE. YOU WILL SEE HOW WELL BEHAVED THE DOG IS AND REALISE THAT NOT ALL DOGS ARE THE SAME (AGGRESSIVE) AND YOU MIGHT EVEN START TO LIKE DOGS!
Critical thinking POSSIBLE QUESTIONS: 1. DEFINE CRITICAL THINKING. 2. CAN YOU IDENTIFY AREARS IN YOUR LIFE IN WHICH YOU USE CRITICAL THINKING? 3. CAN YOU IDENTIFY AREAS IN YOUR LIFE IN WHICH YOU DON T USE CRITICAL THINKING? 4. DISCUSS HOW CRITICAL THINKING CHANGES YOUR ACTIONS AND BELIEFS.
