The English, tea and protocols The English, tea and protocols As in London, the five o'clock tea is an inevitable ritual.It is an inheritance that the old English conquerors have left in various parts of the globe and that manifests itself with different intensities in different places. When we meet a typical Englishman it is important to take into account some aspects of his character that will definitely mark the deal with us. For example, English is much colder and more distant than, for example, the inhabitants of Latin American towns or places like Italy or Greece. Respect is fundamental but even more is adapting to the forms and protocols. From moments as trivial as tea with tea or even a simple game of cricket, English makes a whole ceremony. Thus there are certain ways to say and to do almost anything.

As far as the language is concerned, the English used by the British is clear and clean English, as well as much more formal than other English speakers. The manners and habits of typical English may seem very fine but nevertheless there is a very strong cultural current that rests on English humor, a mood at times acid and at times almost black, sometimes even hurtful. And in this aspect, as in so many others, English can recognize its defect but is hardly willing to give or change it.
