  2. SSR- Students will read the novel for 10 minutes As you read, fill out paper organizers for Theme, Symbols, and Characters Write specific text Identify the figurative language used Write the page number for the text

  3. Monday Vocabulary Each student will copy the sentence onto the Vocabulary/ Grammar handout. Use context clues to predict the meaning of the underlined word, then copy the definition from the dictionary.

  4. Disparagement And this is said in disparagement, whereas it is one of the greatest talents the species has and one that has made it superior to animals that are satisfied with what they have.

  5. Marvel Marvel Now the neighbors knew they had witnessed a great marvel.

  7. Read pages 24-26 (Table talk 7 min) As you read, write notes on your colored paper with quotes and page numbers for: Characters Symbols Themes

  8. Draw representations of the four things Kino will buy with the money from the pearl. On a piece of paper, students will draw pictures to represent each of the four things Kino says he will buy with the money from the pearl and use text to describe it. (20 min).

  9. Example Kino wants to buy a harpoon, because he lost his, and he needs it for fishing. Then to the lovely gray surface of the pearl came the little things Kino wanted: a harpoon to take the place of one lost a year ago, a new harpoon of iron with a ring in the end of the shaft; . Pp 24-25

  12. Problem Problem: Combining sentences Rule: Make sure the comma comes before the conjunction when combining sentences. Wrong: I thought I knew where to go but, it turns out I was lost. Right: I thought I knew where to go, but it turns out I was lost.

  14. Students read pages 29-33 from the novel Look for details that describe the characters and write them down in your charts. Quick Write (10 min). Kino The Doctor Coyotito Write the quote and the page number. Many of your are forgetting to do this!

  15. La Perla The clip is from a film adaptation of The Pearl What does the clip show of Kino and Juana s relationship that we don t see in the novel? Why are Kino s words important? What does it emphasize from the novel?

  16. Answer the following questions in your journals/notes for pp.43-46 Pg. 43 What does the gossip of the villagers foreshadow about Kino and his family? Pg. 45 What does the dialogue between Kino and Juan Tomas show about the challenges the Indians face in the village? Pg. 46 Fill in information for The Priest/Father on your BLUE papers. Pg. 46 What does the third paragraph ( The brothers, as they walked along ) tell readers about Kino s people?

What does the first pearl buyer tell Kino about the pearl? a) The pearl is extremely valuable. b) Kino should go to the capital for a better price. c) The size of the pearl is common. d) The pearl is too large to be valuable. 2. What does the pearl buyer do with his hands behind the table? a) He shuffles a deck of cards. b) He makes a coin appear and disappear. c) He plays with some pearls. d) He handles a knife. 3. What is the best inference can we make about the effects of colonialism on Kino and his people? a) It has not affected Kino s family because they are used to their poor lifestyle. b) The affects of colonialism has established inequality and fear in the lives of the naitves. c) Colonialism continues to happen and there is nothing they can do about it.

  23. Thursday You need your do now sheets, The Pearl, poem analysis from yesterday, half sheet

  24. Crossover Analysis With the poem from yesterday, make the comparison to The Pearl: How does colonization affect native peoples? How does the speaker in the poem and Kino experience colonialism? Use evidence from BOTH texts for support.

  25. Problem: Paragraph transitions Rule: Add a sentence at the beginning of a paragraph that refers to what was written before and leads to what will be written after. Example: The Mavs are not only the best team because of Dirk Nowitski, they also have the best owner, Mark Cuban. Example: First period is always boring because the teacher just talks and talks, but second period is the exact opposite, we get to draw and be creative in Art. What was the previous paragraph about? What will the next one be about?

  26. Your turn! Pretend you are writing a paper about your school day. Write a transition sentence going between the paragraph about your 2ndand 3rdperiod class. Give a comment about 2ndperiod that leads into the paragraph about 3rdperiod.

  27. Historical context Read the article given to you and answer the questions below about the paragraphs. What is a monopoly? What are antitrust laws? BOX the titles of the antitrust laws, underline what they do.

  28. Table Talk Students read pages 47-53 and fill out their charts for characters, themes, and symbols. Table talk (17 min). How is pearl buying a monopoly in the novel? What affect does this have on fishermen like Kino?

  29. Quick Write Describe what Kino and the others go through with the pearl buyers. Share responses with white boards

What is the message of the Father s sermon to the villagers which he makes every year? a) You should just accept where you are in life and not try to better yourself or your position b) Giving money to the church is a good thing, and you should give all you can. c) You should work really hard to that you can do better in life and improve yourself. d) Beggars outside the church are a problem and should be thrown into Hell.
