Revision techniques totry Someof theseseemodd to those who don t usethem but eachone works for somepeople. Weall learn in different ways. It s amatter of experimenting to seewhat works for your child. Revisiontimetable The secret witha revision timetable is to not spend more time planning it than doing it! Put the date of exams in first, then reward time , then plan two out of three sessions a day. Put a copy of the examtimetablewhere it canbeseen.Tick off exams as theyare taken. Subject revisionplanner Divide a pieceof A3 paper(or two A4sheets stucktogether)into threecolumns. Cuecards Postcard sizecards.Questionon oneside, answer onthe other.Goodfor content-based subjectslikescience. Left column -not known. Middle column -learning. Right column -known. Why thisworks: Making themisareminder of what to learn.Writing questions also helpslearning. Theyareportable.Youcanreviseon the bus,in the car, inthe park, onthe beachetc. Apartnercanhold upthe cardwith the question facing the studentandreadthe answer on the back. The studentcanreadthe question andturn the card over tocheck the answer. Thestudentcanmarkthe cardwith atick everytime s/ hegetsthe answer right.Fiveticksandit islearned. Cards can be sorted into learning and known piles. The learning pile canbegonethrough everyday. The known pile canbegonethrough onceaweek. Write topic headings on post-it notes and put them in the appropriate column. As they learn eachtopic, theymoveit to the rightuntil all the topicsarein the known column. Why thisworks: It tells the student what to revise (not knownfirst, then learning)andhow they areprogressing. It shows what theyalready know. Be The Best You Can Be 6
Revision techniques totry Mind mapping Mind mapsaregoodfor peoplewho remember visual images well. The topic is the centralidea -addbranchesto showthe different sections of the main topic, then use colour and images to make it morememorable. Mnemonics Mnemonicsareusefulfor rememberinglists or sequences, forinstance Richard of YorkGave Battlein Vain for the colours of the rainbow. Why thisworks: The mnemonic is a memorable sentence or phrase and easier to remember than a list of words.Researchshows theywork bestif studentsmakeuptheir own andthe sillier the better! Why thisworks: Students who remember visual images well will rememberthe colours /shapes/pictures in the mind map they have drawn and can redraw all or part of it in the exam to help with planninganswers. Revision techniques totry Teaching someoneelse Evidence shows revisionworksbestwhen students finish by having to recall information from their memory in a different way to answering examquestions. Agoodtacticfor this isfor astudentto teachit to someone else. Answering examinationquestions Findpastpapersandanswer the questionsinthe time allowed. Examboardshavecopiesof past papersonline with the markschemes. Why thisworks: Research shows producing informationfrom memory is the bestrevision. Some subjects, like English Language, are about producing responses like a letter or an essay and not about learning facts. This is what has to be done in the exam. It s the onlyway to let the examiner know what the studentknows. Why thisworks: If you can teach it, you have to know the topic very well. You not only have to recall information, you alsohaveto work out how to tell someone elseaboutit inawaywhich helps the otherperson learn. Be The Best You Can Be 8
