Effective Revision Strategies for Language Practice

Multiple choice quizzes
-Research advice – keep to 3-4 options

- options similar

-Not labelled as a test – ok to forget
-Repeated quiz after 2-3 weeks and re-ordered the
questions

-Have also used quizizz.com/kahoot/quizlet – but can take
more time to set up quizzes and devices.
-Ease of use to adapt
-Quick to do and mark in class
-Easy for pupils to track progress
-Easy starter/plenary
-Pupils got bored by 3
rd
 round of this style
-Depending on options possibly too easy

-Really useful for revision for the year 9 exams.
-
Pupils improved their scores when the test was repeated and
they also seemed to enjoy the challenge to beat their previous
score.
-
Pupils did really well overall in the year 9 exams considering
they were writing from memory for the first time without
support from their books. It was evident that they knew some
of the key words from the multiple choice quiz well.

Translate the words to see how
many points you can get!

Challenge grids
-Plenary or starter
-Pupils try to get as many point
as they can in the time limit.
-Each box could contain a
different question to answer or
definition to explain.

-Differentiated by choice of level
– can mix levels.
-Quick to set up
-Pupils enjoyed the challenge
-No options so makes them have
to think about it more

-Less able pupils struggled –
could be demoralising.

Challenge grids
-Another option of
layout.
-Pupils struggled to
remember the
topic of last week
etc. – so topics
added for support.
-> Even thenlower
ability struggled to
remember some
English to
translate.
