Dual not Duel WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT Students take college classes while still enrolled in high school Earn dual credit Core classes and CTAE classes Full-time and part-time options Available at Georgia Public, Private and Technical colleges State provides funding for tuition, fees, and books

  3. DUAL ENROLLMENT IS ONE OF SEVERAL SCHEDULING OPTIONS AT CHS Dual Enrollment Advanced Placement Classes Career Technical Pathways Work Based Learning Active Academies (C3/iGrad)

  4. WHAT IS MY GOAL? To get ahead in a subject, to get out of high school, to earn college credit, to gain career skills in a field not offered at the high school

  5. CHANGES TO DE STARTING 2020-21 Students are limited to 30 credit hours. 11th and 12th-grade students are eligible. 9th-grade students are no longer eligible. 10th-grade students eligible for approved CTAE courses at a technical college. 10th-grade students eligible for core classes at USG or technical schools with specific SAT/ACT and GPA requirements. Funded limited to core or CTAE classes (Art, PE, etc. not funded)

  6. FULL TIME VS. PART TIME (BLOCK VS SEMESTER A/B) Full Time Part Time State requires 6 segments between the high school and college 12 15 credits at college Not required to come to High School, some students take 1 class 5 classes at HS/1 at College 4 classes at HS/2 at College Cannot withdraw from classes 3 classes at HS/3 at College Must leave travel time/parking Must be flexible No Withdrawals

ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES Pros Cons Tuition, fees, books are paid by the state Not trying out college it is college Dual credit is earned for HS and College If student does not do well, grade is on two transcripts, block vs A/B Can ease college transition and allow students to explore career interests earlier Working two systems Variety of classes at college Two different calendars Schedule Out of touch with HS Some students are truly ready to Move On Always up to the college to accept credits Transportation needed

  13. DUAL ENROLLMENT VS. AP CLASSES Dual Enrollment AP Travel to college campus College level class taught at high school It is always the decision of the receiving college to award credit Some colleges consider AP classes more rigorous that DE classes Many classes will transfer to colleges with a grade of C or better Must take AP Exam for potential credit Classes are given 10 bonus points added to weighted NGA Classes may affect future college GPA and credited attempted Core classes are given .5 bonus points on HOPE GPA

TWO SEPARATE STUDENT PROCESSES High School College Deadline for participation form Admissions requirements and deadlines and participation form HS graduation requirements Own emails and platforms for handing in work Approves funding Full access to campus resources No access to college systems, professors, grading Can participate in activities, sports, etc.

HOPE AND TRANSCRIPT One college semester counts as 1.0 credits Academic, degree level classes are given .5 quality points for HOPE Some classes are given AP weight for HS transcript DE classes (core) count as a rigor class Does not count as attempted credits for HOPE Some EOC tests may apply Grades are transcribed as mid-level (A=95, B=85, C=75, D=70, F=60) Withdrawals are transcribed as 60 s

  16. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS CHS has no access to the college admissions, registration, or professors Special Services (IEP, 504) must be arranged directly with college Must maintain satisfactory Academic Progress as determined by the college Summer classes also funded at some colleges

PROCESS Gather information (this meeting, CCSD website, college websites, college info sessions, etc.) Meet with your school counselor Apply to college of choice Fill out application on Gafutures.org Hand in CCSD form to school counselor by April 1 Follow all college procedures for orientation and registration Give a copy of your college schedule to your school counselor
