Romans 11:5-24. Paul continues to give examples to see how God is not done with the Jews: He is still working with them, in them and for them.
Romans 11:5+6 The main point: the same way God had a remnant in Elijah s time who remained faithful to Him, there is a remnant of Jews who have and will believe in Jesus and that is another example of how God is not through with the Jews.
Romans 11:5-6 A Corollary: The remnant was chosen by grace. Something we have seen throughout these chapters is as much as we would see in that remnant choices that individuals make, when it comes to God s part, He was choosing them and it was only based in His goodness and not what they deserved.
Romans 11:5-6 Grace: God s goodness expressed in various forms to undeserving, illdeserving individuals. God giving us the good things we don t deserve. Granting favor because of who He is, not because of who we are.
Romans 11:5+6 Don t talk to God about what you deserve, talk to Him about what you can receive from His gracious hand
Romans 11:7-10 Remnant: Human side: faith God s side: grace Unbelieving Jews: Human side: Unbelief God s side: verses 7-10
Romans 11:7-10 V9. Interesting twist. In Psalm 69:22-23, David is talking about his place as a Jew before God to be protected from Gentile enemies and what God will do to correct them. Paul is using it for what God is doing to the Jews in light of His work with the Gentiles
Romans 11:7-10 2 Main Points: Whichever direction you want to go, God will help you get there. He exalts the humble and makes war against the proud! God is still not giving up on the Jews!
Romans 11:11-16 This is talking about God s side of human decision. As the Jews are rejecting Jesus, Paul is seeing a divine intent and purpose for it and how it will be to their benefit as a people. (very important in Romans chapters 9-11)
Romans 11:11-16 In these verses, Paul is talking about what God has established through the Gentiles that would be something newly established in Christ that Jews would need to join and it would not be about Jewishness. But this would also be about making the Jews envious and how great it will be for the Gentiles when Jews join the fold! But in all, God is not done with the Jews!
Romans 11:16-24 Verse 16 makes an important transition though. It is the first fruits of dough and the root (both references to God s initial work with the Jews) which makes His work with the Gentiles holy .ie of Him .ie even possible So Gentiles, don t let it go to your heads
Romans 16-24 Now this is where it gets really exciting: if verse 11-15 are talking about how the Jews are dependent on the Gentiles and the Jews will need to join God s work in them to be made right (and it is),
verse 17-24 talk about how the Gentiles are dependent on the Jews for what God is establishing in them..and God in Christ is connecting the Gentiles to the Jews!
