BASIC INFORMATION Turku is located in the southeast coast of Finland. Turku is Finland s oldest city, which was founded in 1229. It s considered a city of art, culture and history. It s easy to get to Turku from for example Helsinki and Tampere via bus or a train within a couple of hours. You can also fly there from Oulu. From Europe it s very easy to get to Turku from Stockholm. The flight takes only an hour and the boat takes a day/night. There are also straight flights to Turku from Copenhagen, Riga, Gdansk and Budapest. It s also possible to tour the wonderful archipelago around Turku on a cruise ship or your own boat.
There are about 180 000 habitants in Turku, which makes it the 5th most populated city in Finland. It s officially a bilingual city, with 5% being Swedish speakers. Finland s traveling organisation chose Turku to be Finland s topdomestic travel attraction in 2011. Reasoning behind it had a lot to do with the fact that there has been a lot of work done in Turku to improve tourism, which can be seen in the growing tourist figures.

MOOMINWORLD Located in Naantali, close to Turku Theme park made based on Moomin books by Tove Jansson Opened in 1993 Attracts a lot of visitors/ travelers
Saaristomeri Kurjenrahka 500 km2 29 km2 opened in 1983 opened in 1998 an empire of islands full of forest, rocky islets and changing nature. mostly swamp and forest a small national park, only markable as a local hiking destination. Saaristomeri national park composes a core of biosphere region
CULTURES European Capital of Cultures in 2011 Several theaters, museums, art galleries and cinemas Sibelius Museum, the only museum in Finland that specializes in the field of music Most notable event is the Medieval Market held in July every year Turku is the official Christmas city of Finland Christmas peace is declared December 24th from the Brinkkala Hall balcony Has some of the oldest music festivals in Scandinavia Ruisrock, Turku Music Festival And also the largest electronic music festival in Northern Europe: New Music Festival
