  1. USING YOUR CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS TO SOLVE RIDDLES

  2. In order to be a critical thinker, first we need to be a responsible reader That means we need to read through whatever we are reading more than once Then we start questioning what we are reading Make sure that you understand every part of what the riddle is saying this will be important later when you start thinking critically about the riddle BEING A RESPONSIBLE READER

  3. Once you have read and re-read the riddle, possibly several times, you will start using your knowledge base, and your experiences, to develop an answer Now you are becoming a critical thinker as you sift through the possibilities As you develop answers you need to test them against the riddle does this answer fit every part of the riddle? Don t get stuck on one idea if it doesn t fit, move on This is essential to being a critical thinker Transitioning from being a responsible reader to being a critical thinker

  4. RIDDLES ARE DELIBERATELY TRYING TO FOOL YOU IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS They will try to misdirect you They will force an idea into your head that you can t get out, often using repetition They will try to confuse you by saying way more than they need to You can overcome all of these obstacles by using your critical thinking skills

  5. A boy is walking down the road with a doctor. While the boy is the doctor's son, the doctor isn't the boy's father. Then who is the doctor? This riddle tries to fool you into thinking it has to be a man by repeatedly mentioning male figures in the riddle in fact, they mention a male character 5 times in this short riddle while using the word doctor 4 times most readers have now associated the word doctor with being a male At this point it's difficult to get that idea out of your head this is when you have to step up your critical thinking game and start accessing your knowledge TAKE FOR EXAMPLE THE RIDDLE WE SOLVED IN CLASS THE OTHER DAY

  6. In order to access your knowledge, you have to stop and think Take a minute, breath, then ask yourself a vital question HOW DO I ACCESS THAT KNOWLEDGE? In this case, the vital question is, who can be a doctor? Of course once you stop and think about it, the answer is obvious that anyone can be a doctor Now you have just used your critical thinking skills to solve this classic riddle!

  7. LET'S TAKE THOSE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS FOR A SPIN ON ANOTHER RIDDLE! Sherry s father has five daughters- Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

  8. In order to solve this riddle, you had to be a responsible reader Being a responsible reader means you read it more than once, probably several times And it means that you paid attention to every word that you read They were trying to distract you from the fact that they gave you the name of the fifth daughter at the beginning of the riddle by misdirecting you with the 4 names at the end This is where you had to use your critical thinking skills to avoid being misdirected HOW DID YOU DO AT SOLVING THAT RIDDLE?

  9. LET'S TRY ANOTHER TYPE OF RIDDLE A girl fell from a 40-foot ladder but didn t get hurt how is this possible?

  10. WHAT WAS DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS RIDDLE FROM THE OTHER ONE? Instead of hiding the answer in the riddle and misdirecting you, this riddle forced you to be a critical thinker It asked you to think on a deeper level and go through all of the possibilities There are a lot of things you may think of at first that could make sense as the answer Maybe she fell onto a mattress Maybe she fell into a pool Maybe somebody caught her But once you started really using your critical thinking skills and realized there was a much simpler answer, then it just clicked!

  11. LET'S TRY SOME MORE TOGETHER BACK IN THE CLASSROOM!
