Three related
areas we
have
focussed on
1. Culture
“Getting the right staff in the right place
to influence the right people”
2. Policy
“Documents that are rarely read but
occasionally come in handy”
3. Infrastructure
“Tools on the Internet”
Analyse
faculty needs for data management;
provides disciplinary expertise
Create
policies and workflows
Identify skill gaps and ensure appropriate
training
provisions
Identify
support service gaps
and design strategies to fill them
Advise faculty
on internal and external developments in data management
Culture,
Data Steward
One Data Steward per faculty
Data Steward usually has
PhD in discipline or methodology relevant to network
Data Stewards
 coordinated by Library
(vital!)
Initially financed via strategic CvB funding;
now funded by each faculty
Work of Data Steward flows into other areas
 (Open Access, Information Management,
Research itself)
Articles and blogposts on Data Stewardship at TU Delft
Culture,
Data Steward
Culture,
Data Manager
Analyse data management needs
 of a research group
Propose, i
mplement and monitor workflows and tools
 to
improve data management practice
Oversee collection, description, cleaning, merging, licensing,
sharing and publishing of data
Culture,
Research Software Engineer (RSE)
Develops code
 for applications /interfaces / data processing /
web services etc
Champion software sustainability practices
, oversee and
ensure maintenance and documentation of code produced by
group members
Design and maintain databases
for specific use cases
Culture,
RSE & Data Manager
Funding for these two posts supported by TU Delft Open Science
Programme, and NWO funding for
Digital Competence Centre
Sustainability plan being developed
Responsibility for
management shared by ICT & Library
Data Steward for High Performance Computing
 also being appointed

Our
Vision for Research Data Management
training
is to provide four levels of training
1)
Information, Digital Literacy
2)
Basics of Research Data Management
3)
Learning workflows for disciplinary data
management
4)
Co-creating disciplinary /
methodological workflows
Research Data Umbrella
Policy
Defines the why of research data, and
lists common responsibilities (

Research Data Faculty
Policy
Software Policy
(Ratified in 2021) Deals with ownership,
publication, etc of software
Tailors umbrella policy with specific
workflows and recommendations per
faculty (

Policy
Personal Research Data
Workflow
Provides workflow for researchers
 to to
ensure ethical, legal and funders’
requests
1)
Data Management Plan
2)
GDPR Privacy Check
3)
Human Resource Ethics

HPC Facilities
Infrastructure
Generous ad hoc ICT
support but fewer
integrated services
Trusted repository,
 and community
development across technical
universities
Providing support for HPC beyond SURF
offerings
DMPOnline, GitLab but still much to do at
storage / tool level
Summary
Communication
Interpersonal skills are
essential for research
support
Recognition
Recognition and reward by
multiple parties is
essential for cultural
change to happen.
Cultural
Research Data is more of
a cultural than a technical
challenge
Disciplinary
Approach
Helps build confidence of
researchers and reflect
their approach

Long Term
Approach
Changing behaviour takes
time
Stakeholders
Research Data effects
multiple services &
faculties across campus
