  2. Background D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was established in 1983 under the direction of then Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates who had a vision to help kids keep off drugs Partnership was between the Los Angeles Police Department and LA Unified School District D.A.R.E. is a comprehensive K-12 prevention education program taught in thousands of schools in America, as well as 50+ other countries by highly trained law enforcement officers

What is being reported The President s 2017 Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis The Commission s report identifies keepin it REAL The Surgeon General s 2016 landmark report entitled, Facing Addiction in America: keepin it REAL curriculum is among a number of programs identified with strong scientific evidence supporting effectiveness The National Institute of Justice s CrimeSolutions.gov lists keepin it REAL as promising California Healthy Kids Resource Center lists keepin it REAL as research validated United Nations D.A.R.E. is the only international drug prevention curricula to hold consultative status In its September 10, 2014 issue, Scientific American published an article entitled, The New D.A.R.E. Program this one works In August 2017, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly published; Randomized controlled trials of the new curriculum, called keepin it REAL, have shown that in 14 months, drug use was reduced in students who received the D.A.R.E. curriculum

  6. D.A.R.E. America Founded as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit in 1989, D.A.R.E. America s critical functions include: Create a national awareness of D.A.R.E. Curriculum development and implementation Develop all educational materials Ensure fidelity of all D.A.R.E. programs and trainings Monitor standards and integrity of D.A.R.E. instruction Program preservation and expansion in all states and communities Marketing and media relations Governance Government and corporate relations Fundraising including courtesy fund-raising notifications to Chiefs/Sheriffs Protect the D.A.R.E. Trademark and enforce its misuse

  7. Additional Responsibilities of D.A.R.E. America Sponsor research Provide financial aid for training activities Serve as an information resource center for curricular and program inquiries Provide student classroom materials for new D.A.R.E. implementations Conduct the annual D.A.R.E. International Training Seminar Offer Mentor Officer Trainings (MOT) to assist states with developing training teams Liaison with pertinent professional organizations

America Education Advisory Board The board is comprised of leading professionals from major national education organizations Youth Advocacy Board The Youth Advocacy Board (YAB), initiated by D.A.R.E. America in 2000, is composed of 50 members one high school student per State YAB members serve as D.A.R.E. s student advocates and ambassadors, thereby providing insight, voice, and advocacy for D.A.R.E. education programs

  22. Trademarks of D.A.R.E. America All D.A.R.E. officers and affiliated agencies accept a shared responsibility to protect the trademark and ensure that unauthorized use does not occur D.A.R.E. America is mandated by Federal Trademark Law to enforce proper use of its registered marks therefore it is essential that all D.A.R.E. officers and agencies understand what is permitted and what is a violation The law states that no one can use any of the D.A.R.E. Trademarks without written permission from D.A.R.E. America If D.A.R.E. America allowed unauthorized use to occur the Trademarks could be lost to the open market The only exception agencies with D.A.R.E. can use the D.A.R.E. logo on stationery and business cards without formal written permission
