About this course I ll be organizing this course, and presenting occasionally The first two sessions will present topics on the PhD program The bulk of the semester consists of other presentations Faculty introducting their research area, topics, and contributions Resources for graduate students How to give a research talk, write a research paper, etc.
About me I am from Nanjing, China I studied in Tsinghua Univ. (Beijing) and Rice Univ. (Houston) Where are you from? Where have you studied?
Overview of CSE PhD program Initial phase Orientation, remaining course work, research seminars Research rotations with potential faculty mentors Intermediate phase Defining and starting your research with a faculty mentor Quals exam integrating research perspectives cohesively Dissertation proposal to your defense committee Completion phase Finishing your dissertation and publications Dissertation defense to the department and your committee
Its more of a marathon than a sprint Plan on a 4 to 6 year duration (as a rule of thumb) Time to choose, define, and develop your research topic Time to explore and get involved in your research community Take advantage of many opportunities along the way Review published and submitted papers with your adviser Get all you can out of your mentored teaching experience Join and participate in student and professional organizations Take good care of yourself Acknowledge and manage stress, setbacks, and workloads Enjoy the community around you and ask them for help Make use of the health and wellness resources at WUSTL
Your first semester here You ll be participating in 2 research rotations in CSE 591 The grade in this course depends on completion of those You also will have brief paper reviewing assignments You will be taking additional courses besides CSE 591 For breadth, including PhD program requirements To reinforce and extend your preparation in areas of interest
