Finding Capstone Sites, Finding Site Supervisors, & Developing Capstone Projects For use in the creation of your BAAS Capstone Application for enrollment in OCED 4360 & 4361
Finding Capstone Sites The site you chose depends on your professional goals. Your capstone site should be an organization doing the type of work you hope to do after you graduate. Many non-profit organizations need help with projects investigate the non-profit sector in your chosen field. Talk to friends and relatives who work in your preferred field about doing a project for their organization. Most organizations - for-profit and non-profit gladly accept free labor. Cold call organizations in your chosen field and ask about project opportunities. Talk to Career Services about organizations that are doing the work you want to do. Finding Capstone Sites continued Many BAAS students choose to do their projects with the organization where they currently work. If you choose this option, keep in mind the following requirements: Your capstone project cannot be a duplication of your job duties. The project you create must be a new experience for you. Your site supervisor cannot be your work supervisor. If you hope to be promoted at work after you earn your degree, talk to your boss boss about a project and being your site supervisor. If you hope to move to a different department within your organization after you earn your degree, talk to that department about a project and being your site supervisor.
Finding Capstone Supervisors Your capstone supervisor is someone who can act as a mentor during your project. The site supervisor should possess the following qualities: Holds a position higher than, or different from, the one you currently hold Has extensive knowledge of the organizational needs and the capstone project s contribution to the organization Can help you determine the best resources to reference and ways to accomplish your project In addition to a site supervisor, you will need an Independent Evaluator (IE). Your IE should be knowledgably about your project but should not be someone you go to for help with the project. Your IE will fill out evaluation forms on your progress throughout the course of your project completion. You will create these evaluation forms in your first capstone class OCED 4360.
Developing Capstone Projects Since the BAAS degree is an individualized degree program, no two capstone projects are exactly the same. Each project is unique to each student s career goals, courses taken in the Professional Development module, and the needs of the organization. The last 15 slides of this presentation include tables of capstone sites, project titles, and end-results of projects from the last few semesters. Use the lists to think about projects possibilities, acceptable sites, and typical capstone titles. You may not duplicate any of the examples they are provided as examples only and may not be repeated or copied. In order to compete your capstone application you will need to know where you will complete your project, what you will be creating for the project, and who your site supervisor will be.
Developing Capstone Projects continued The following tables of capstone site and project examples are not organized in themes or PD emphases. This is done purposely. Research shows that if we examine a wide-range of topics and ideas we will be better able to determine the best course of action to solve our particular problem. Diversity of ideas is an important tool to find novel and worthwhile solutions to problems. Read all of the examples and think about what type of project would both benefit society and your future career goals. Remember to stretch your skill set by developing a project that will be a new learning experience for you.
