  3. Physical state Physical state phenol phenol resorcinol resorcinol catechol catechol state Solid color White crystal Puffy flaky Gray fine powder odor Phenolic odor

  4. Ignition test phenol phenol resorcinol resorcinol catechol catechol inflammability luminous smoky Apperance change melting Color change Odor change residue No change No change No residue

  5. solubility solubility All soluble in water and they can convert the blue litmus paper to red that means All acids acidic by Na2CO3 * all neutral

  6. phenol Phenolic odor Not done phenol resorcinol No reaction resorcinol catechol catechol Soda lime On cold On hot On cold On hot On cold Phenolic odor 30%NaOH No rection Fecl3 Blue or violet color Green color and rapidly dark On hot On cold On hot Not done Conc. H2so4 No recion

  7. General test General test Azo dye formation test: 1 drop aniline +dil Hcl +NaNO2 Pale yellow color( unstable diazonum salt* ) PHENOLS +10% NaOH Add 2 on 1 gradually phenol and resorcinol will give red orang dye but catechol give dark purple color

  8. Specific Specific test test Phenols + phthaline anhydride + Conc. H2SO4 heat until fussion then pour to beaker containning 10%NaOH to give -pink coclr with phenol due to phenol phthaline indicator. -green fluorescence with resorcinol.* -blue color with catechol due to alizarin indicator formation
