REGISTERING FOR THE ACT Fall 2015
WHY TAKE THE ACT? College admissions Application deadlines start in Fall of Senior year, so need to take ACT as a junior May want to take it more than once to improve scores Scholarships and Admissions Requirements Please note: The examples on the following slides are NOT an inclusive list of scholarships at the listed institutions; many are competitive and NOT guaranteed! Scholarship amounts and requirements are subject to change.
HOPE LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP TN HOPE Lottery Scholarship 21 ACT or 3.0 unweighted GPA Four year Institutions: Freshman and Sophomore years: up to $1,750/semester and Junior and Senior years: up to $2,250/semester Two year Institutions: Up to $1,500 per semester for freshman and sophomore years General Assembly Merit Scholarship 29 ACT and 3.75 unweighted GPA=up to $1,500 supplement to HOPE
MTSU SCHOLARSHIP EXAMPLES FRESHMAN GUARANTEED SCHOLARSHIPS 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA=$5,000/year 28 ACT and 3.5 GPA=$4,000/year 26 ACT and 3.5 GPA=$3,000/year 25 ACT and 3.5 GPA=$2,000/year BUCHANAN Fellows Scholarship (Honors College) NOT guaranteed 29 ACT and 3.5 GPA=potential full tuition scholarship plus book allowance and other benefits Cost of Attendance: $8,296/year=over $33,000 for 4 years!
UTK SCHOLARSHIP EXAMPLES Volunteer Scholarship (not guaranteed; must apply) 3.8 GPA and 34-36 ACT=$8,000/year 30-33 ACT=$6,000/year 28-29 ACT=$3,000/year In-state tuition & fees: $12,436/year=over $48,000 for 4 years!
UTC SCHOLARSHIP EXAMPLES Chancellor s Scholars Program 30 ACT and 3.75 GPA=$4,000/year guaranteed Provost s Scholars Program 26 ACT and 3.5 GPA=$3,000/year guaranteed Mocs Scholars Program 24 ACT and 3.4 GPA=$2,000/year guaranteed

STATE VOUCHER PROGRAM All juniors receive ONE free voucher from the state Can take ACT more than once, but have to pay! Free/Reduced Lunch: qualifies for fee waiver (obtain through Guidance AFTER using State Voucher) Accommodations Testing: Meet with Case Manager to decide which option; DO NOT obtain voucher # or register online until you have done so!
OPTIONS FOR USING YOUR VOUCHER Can use on a Saturday National test date OR the in-school option (Tuesday, April 19th) Saturday National Test Dates: obtain voucher # through Guidance and register on-line For in-school option: Do NOT obtain voucher # Do NOT obtain voucher # and let Mrs. Salerno know your plans; registration will be handled by the school Upcoming Saturday test dates: Saturday, December 12th(Registration Deadline: Nov. 6th) Saturday, February 6th(Registration Deadline: Jan. 8th) Saturday, April 9th(Registration Deadline: March 4th)
USING YOUR VOUCHER Use it when registering online at www.actstudent.org If you obtain a voucher #, you MUST use it for a Saturday test date and will NOT test on the in-school date!
TO REITERATE If you obtain a voucher # to test on a Saturday, you will NOT be eligible for the in-school test date! In-school test date is for students who do NOT feel Saturday options are the best fit for them (i.e. religious reasons, transportation issues, etc.)
CONSIDERATIONS Have you already taken Algebra 2? If so, December test date may be right for you! Allows you more opportunities to take it again depending on your scores If not, may want to wait until Spring to test, so you have had more math curriculum Do you have transportation on Saturday mornings? Which test center is most convenient for you (list available on ACT s website when you register)? Do you plan to test more than once? If so, take it as early as possible!
WHEN DO I HAVE TO DECIDE? If you know for sure you want to test on a Saturday, you may obtain a voucher # from Guidance anytime If you are unsure, talk it over with your parents and share this presentation with them (will be on our website under Testing tab on School Counseling page) Be mindful of registration deadlines!
REGISTRATION SESSIONS We will be hosting registration sessions for upcoming Saturday test dates Sign up for a session through Sign-up Genius email First session: Tuesday, November 3rdduring Genius Hour (12:19) in the Media Center
ACTION STEPS FOR VOUCHERS Talk to your parents and decide if you want to use your voucher for Saturday or in-school option If you choose to test on a Saturday, obtain voucher from Guidance office and register on-line for test date of choice Sign up for registration session via Sign-up Genius if interested If you choose to test in-school, let Mrs. Salerno know your plans to do so; do NOT obtain a voucher or register on-line!
