Case Study on Dowry Harassment and Domestic Violence in India
This case study highlights the vicious cycle of dowry harassment leading to domestic violence in India. It portrays a scenario where a bright young woman faces emotional and physical abuse after refusing to demand money from her parents as instructed by her in-laws. Her father's support leads to a positive outcome, but raises the question of what could have happened if he had not stood by her. The case sheds light on the cultural expectations and unequal treatment of women prevalent in Indian society, despite strict laws against dowry harassment.

Domestic Violence Case from India:Dowry Harassment as a Factor in Domestic Violence
Aims and objectives To demonstrate how cultural practices, in this case the expectation by a groom s family of a dowry, can become implicated in domestic violence
Case details S was a bright daughter of two doctors, herself studying to become a doctor Parents were arranging marriage for her with a prospective groom with a similar educational background The wedding was lavish financed by her father. The groom s family did not want a dowry All seemed well but her father in law strangely and to her shock, asks her to demand a large sum of money from her father so that they both could establish a hospital
Case details She is devastated when her husband sides with her father in law She flatly refuses to ask her parents for money From this point she is tortured through the confiscation of her cell phone though given food occasionally Her in-laws start complaining about her alleged bad character and when she disappears denying knowledge of her whereabouts Her worried parents frantically call her marital home and are not given any answers so her father speaks to a Senior Police Inspector
Case details On visiting the house with the Police, the in-laws again deny knowing her whereabouts but her father persists in searching the house and finds her locked in a small room in the house He takes her home Her husband is subsequently arrested on charges of domestic violence S now lives with her second husband who is very supportive of her and her daughter Her father supported her decision. What would have happened if he had not stood by her but asked her to compromise?
Learning points Even though the groom s family is well-educated, the cultural roles of women are difficult to change In India, as in many countries, women are still treated as unequal to men and are expected to be obedient to their husbands Deaths due to Dowry harassment are not uncommon in India. The laws are very strict and giving or demanding dowry is punishable by law. However, it has not been possible to eradicate this system totally
