CLEANING THE TRACTOR Your tractor is an advanced machine, fitted with an electro--hydraulic control system. Care must be taken when cleaning the tractor, especially if a pressurized water cleaner is used. Neverstandtooclosetothetractorordirectthewa- ter jet on electrical components, seals or intake openings, etc. Never direct jets of cold water at the hot engine or exhaust. See also Recommendations for body- work maintenance in section Lubrication and Maintenance . The tractor is designed and constructed to provide the best performance economically, safely and is easy to use in a wide range of working conditions. Prior to delivery, all machines are carefully in- spected by both the Manufacturer and your local authorized dealer, to make sure that they reach the user in perfect condition. To maintain the tractor in this condition and ensure trouble--free operation, the routine maintenance operations described in the Lubrication/Maintenance chapter of this manu- al must be carried out at the specified intervals. SPARE PARTS Non-original spare parts have not been tested or authorized by the Manufacturer. Installment and/or use of such products may adversely affect the tractor s design specifications, compromising operational safety. Do not increase the pressure in pressurized systems, asthismaycausecomponentpartsto burst. 3. As a general rule, do not allow liquid fuels, lubricants, acids, solvents, etc., to come into contact with the skin. The majority of these products contain substances that are potential health hazards. 10. 17. SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION AND SAFETY WORKING SAFELY During the manufacturing of this tractor, every step has been taken to ensure safe operation. However, thebestwaytoavoidaccidents isto exercisecaution atalltimes.Oncetheaccidenthasalreadyhappened it is too late to remember what steps should have been taken. It is advisable to keep a first aid kit on hand. The tractor must only be used by responsible person- nel, trained in tractor use and authorized to operate the machine. Read this manual carefully before starting, using, carrying out maintenance, refuelling or performing any other type of operation on the tractor. Do not alter the injection system calibration in an at- tempt to increase maximum engine speed. The time spent reading this manual will allow you to get to know your tractor, thereby saving time and ef- fort. This will also help prevent accidents from taking place. 24266 Read all the safety decals on the machine and follow the instructions thereon before starting, operating, refuelling or carrying out maintenance on the ma- chine. Promptly replace any decals that are dam- aged, lost or illegible. Clean the decals if they are covered by mud or de- bris. Donotwearlooseclothingthatmaybetrappedinmov- ing parts. Check that all rotating parts connected to the power take-off are correctly protected. Do not alter the calibration of the pressure relief valves in the various hydraulic circuits (hydrostatic steering, hydraulic lift, auxiliary distributors, etc.). Remember that the tractor is exclusively designed for agricultural use. Any other use will require prior authorization from CNH AMERICA LLC. Avoid using the tractor in unsuitable physical condi- tions, stop work instead. 1-9

  18. SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION AND SAFETY Enter and leave the tractor carefully, using the steps and handles provided. Keep these fittings free of mud and debris. Beforemovingthetractor, alwayscheckthatthearea is free of persons or obstacles. Always operate with the cab or roll bar correctly and securely fitted on the tractor: periodically check that the fittings are not loose and that all parts of the struc- ture are free from any damage and deformation. Do not modify the roll bar by welding parts, drilling holes, etc., as this could adversely affect the rigidity of the structure. STARTING THE TRACTOR Beforestartingtheengine, checkthatthehandbrake isonandthatthegearsandpowertake-offaredisen- gaged, even if thetractor isfitted witha start-upsafe- ty device. Never disconnect the start-up safety switch. If the switch does not work correctly, contact your local dealer for eventual repair operations. 24134 Never run the engine in a closed space without en- suringadequateventilation.Exhaustfumesaredam- aging to the health and can be lethal. Before starting the engine, make sure that all at- tached implements are lowered to the ground. USING THE TRACTOR Before starting the engine, check that all covers and guards are correctly in position (roll bar, hood side panels, power take-off guard, front axle transmission shaft cover, etc.). Select the most suitable wheel setting for the work in hand, i.e.: the setting that provides the best stability. Never start or manoeuvre the tractor unless seated in the driving position. 24136 24135 1-10

  19. SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION AND SAFETY Engage the clutch slowly: if engaged too quickly, es- pecially when the tractor is getting out of a hole, ditch or operating on muddy ground or steep slopes, the tractor may overturn. Fully press down the clutch pedal immediately if the front wheels start to lift. Whenthetractorismoving, theoperatormustremain correctly seated in the driving position. Never get on or off the tractor while in movement. Whenusingthebrakes, pressthepedaldownslowly. Avoid curving at high speeds. Always use the tractor at a speed that will guarantee safe operation on the type of land being worked. When working on uneven ground, use maximum care to ensure proper stability. If you have to work with the tractor on a gradient, for example on hillsides, drive at moderate speed espe- cially when taking curves. 24223 24137 Proceed with maximum caution when working with the wheels near the edge of ditches or slopes. When driving on public highways, observe the High- way Code. When travelling downhill, keep the tractor in gear. Never release the clutch and never leave the gears in neutral. When driving, do not rest your feet on the brake or clutch pedals. 19400 1-11

  21. SECTION 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION AND SAFETY 24139 24138 When towing, do not negotiate curves with the differ- ential lock engaged as this may prevent you from steering the tractor. Nevercarrypassengers,noteveninsidethecab,un- less the tractor is fitted with an approved extra seat. USING IMPLEMENTS AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY When driving on roads, connect thebrake pedalsus- ing the plate provided. Braking when the pedals are not connected could cause the tractor to skid. Avoid excessive wear on the brakes by using engine brak- ing. Donotconnectimplementsormachinerythatrequire more power than can be generated by your tractor model. Nevernegotiatesharpcurveswiththepowertake-off under a heavy load; this may damage the universal joints on the transmission shaft connected to the power take-off. TOWING AND TRANSPORT Never stand between the reversing tractor and the implement when hitching. When using implements that require the tractor to be stationarywiththeenginerunning, keepthegearand range levers in the neutral position, apply the hand brake and use suitable wheel chocks. To guarantee tractor stability when moving, adjust the hitching device according to the trailer or imple- ment to be used. Drive slowly when towing extremely heavy loads. For your own safety, do not tow trailers that are not fitted with an independent braking system. If the tractor is used to tow heavy loads, always use the hitching device and never hitch loads onto the lower arms or the top link of the three-point linkage. This may result in tipping or overturning. 24143 1-12
