Capitalization Rules for Races, Nationalities, and Species
Learn how to properly capitalize races, nationalities, and species in your writing. Always capitalize races such as Chinese, Indian, and Hispanic. Capitalize nationalities and nation-related words like French, Swiss, and Spanish. Races Always capitalize races. Examples: Chinese Indian Hispanic Note: The terms black and white are usually not capitalized; however, if you capitalize these terms when referring to races, be consistent throughout your paper.
Nationalities Capitalize nationalities and nation-related words such as languages. Examples: French fries Swiss cheese Spanish omelet
Species Capitalize the first part of a species scientific name. Example: Homo sapien Felis silvestris catus Canis lupus familiaris
