Matthew 5-7 The Teachings of Jesus - 2020
You are salt! You are the salt of the earth Salt is distinctive Salt preserves Salt flavors Salt blends in Salt creates thirst
You are salt! But if the salt loses its savor how shall it be seasoned? We need to remain effective We can lose our savor by letting the world dilute or corrupt our influence We do this when we become like the world 1 John 2:15-17, Matthew 13:22, etc.
You are salt! It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled under foot God expects us to remain faithful and useful When we fail John 15:1-2, 6
You are salt! Observations about our salt Is it possible to have too much salt? We are to be mild and pleasant Ephesians 4:1-2, Philippians 4:5 Colossians 4:6, let your speech be with grace, seasoned with salt
You are salt! Observations about our salt This is a call to be different Just as salt makes food different (and flavorful ), so we are to be That is the point of this sermon of Jesus We blend in as best we can, without becoming like the world John 17:14- 16 1 Peter 2:11-12, honorable conduct
You are the light of the world Light illuminates Light exposes darkness Light provides security Light is a source of warmth Light can sustain life You are light!
What is our light reflecting? It is Christ Himself John 8:12, 8:5, 1:4-5 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ We reflect His light 2 Timothy 1:10, 2 Peter 1:19 You are light!
A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden Cities often built on hills for security, etc. If lights were burning, they could be seen from far distances This is how our light is to shine bright, high and visible! Do we OPENLY live His word? You are light!
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house Don t hide your light. It is intended to shine! How else will others come to know the truth? You are light!
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house It is intended for ALL who are in the house Do others see your light or are you hiding it? (You can live godly and still hide your light) Mathew 10:32-33 You are light!
Let your light so shine before men Our goal is to win others Let your light SO shine ( in such a way NASB) brightly and with purpose That God may be glorified our goal! 1 Peter 2:11-12 Cf. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 all things to all men You are light!
Observations about light Is it possible to have too much light? Can we blind others with it. Both light and salt are dispensed moderately. Don t be abusive or hateful Matthew 10:16 To some, the slightest light can be an irritant You are light!
Observations about light This too is a call to be different We are lights in a dark world! 1 Peter 4:3-5 2 Corinthians 6:17 You are light!
