1. 66-70 A.D. Simon bar Glora- The Essene sect of Jewish ascetics saw the Jewish revolt against the Romans in 66 70 in Judea as the final end-time battle before the arrival of the Messiah. By the authority of Simon, coins were minted declaring the redemption of Israel. 2. 29/7/2016-End Time Prophecies- the prophecy predicted that the earth would undergo a "polar flip", which would apparently cause the Earth's atmosphere to be pulled to the ground as the surface reels like a vacuum, causing a "rolling cloud" to cover the planet. They also claimed that a worldwide megaquake would ensue.
3. 2020-Jeane Dixon-Armageddon would take place in 2020, and Jesus will return to defeat the unholy Trinity of the Antichrist, Satan, and the false prophet between 2020 and 2037. She had also previously predicted the world would end on February 4, 1962. 4. 2239- Talmud, Orthodox Jews- the Messiah will come within 6000 years from the creation of Adam, and the world could possibly be destroyed 1000 years later. This would put the beginning of the period of desolation in the year 2239 CE and the end of the period of desolation in the year 3239 CE
The discussion of Matt. 24 is prompted by the disciples whose primary concern was the temple (Matt. 24:1, 3; cf. Lk. 21:5.) Jesus response to that concern sweeps beyond the immediate (vv. 4-35) into the distant future (vv. 36ff) The list of Matt. 24:4-35 strictly concerns the destruction of the temple. Even if the signs were to point to a time framework beyond A.D. 70, the centre still holds - these signs are not determinative of the day. Jesus says they can only be understood as the beginning of birth pains (v. 8).
Before the fall of Jerusalem, self proclaimed messiahs among them Theudas and Judas of Galilee (Acts 5:36- 37). False teachers was to become a leading theme in the early church. The timetable of the antichrist falls beyond Matt. 24 and was a concern of the parousia than of the destruction of the temple. John says that in his date (in A.D. 100-110) many antichrists had emerged (1 Jn. 2:18). Such was the concern in the Thessalonian church.
Paul and his contemporaries thought the Lord would come in their day (see 1 Thess. 4:15-17). A rumour had even spread that He had come and Paul disputes (2 Thess. 2:1-2). Paul s understanding was that Christ s 2ndcoming would be preceded by the man of lawlessness (2 Thess. 2:1- 11). This can only give us a schedule of the order of events but it should not preoccupy us.
Wars and civil wars (similar to the civil wars e.g.. Caeser and optimates wars of 40s BC. and internecine struggles in Palestine. Such were a standard topic of apocalyptic literature (c.f. Is. 19:2; Ez. 13:13). After the suicide of Emperor Nero, 4 Roman emperors (Galba, Otho, Vitellius and Vespasian) ruled Rome between A.D 68-69. In this period Rome knew no peace. As a result of the wars of the four emperors, and the besiege of Jerusalem/subsequent burglary, famine bit hard to the point of men turning cannibal (Mary of Eleazer).
In the same period inside/outside besieged Jerusalem fights and disorder were the order of the day. Note however the words but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. (Mat 24:6 NIV)
seismos (earthquake) is elsewhere found in apocalyptic contexts (see Rev. 6:12; Is. 13:13). In A.D. 60 an earthquake flattened Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis (present day Turkey where an earthquake in 1999 claimed 1000 lives).
Disasters have been the trend in history. 1.1million Jews die of famine in 70 A.D. Black death in the 14thcent. killed 25 Million in Europe and beyond. Earthquake kills 850,000 in Shansi, China on 23/7/1556. iv. Earthquake and Tsunami kills apprx. 30,000 in Japan 2011 and leads to large scale radioactive contamination. i. ii. iii.
Jesus warning is that the end is coming soon, but that does not mean that it is imminent as soon as the signs are on the horizon. The point of highlighting the eschatological events listed is to discourage eschatological calculations and speculations. Ridiculously the list has been adopted as a an end time clock. Each generation is tempted to think its natural disasters are the worst and most significant eschatologically than those of their predecessors, but it is not the end yet.
At the most such events can be seen as the beginning of birth pains, but the period from the first labor pains to childbirth as we know it may be short or long. Its worth taking note that these signs expand beyond the destruction of the temple and the birth pains posture is to be adopted.
The word immediately in verse 29 seem to suggest that the subsequent events come soon after the resultant distress of the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The fall of Babylon and Egypt are expressed in similar manner in Isaiah 13:10 and Ezekiel 32: 7-8 respectively. Such expressions of commotions and changes in the heavens are taken as representative of great commotions and revolutions upon earth.
The disciples were on the one hand at danger of being misled by false messiahs On the other hand they were threatened by persecution. Disciples are not to fear, worry or succumb to the pressure. The disciples especially during Nero s rule were crucified, used as nocturnal lights, or sacrificed as gladiators in coloseums. By refusing to participate in Roman religious rites and declining to Roman citizen's reverence to the Emperor Divinity, Christians were rebellious traitors who were trying to change the system and, true to its nature, the system reacted against them in a brutal way.
As long as the law we follow finds a point of reference which the world around does not subscribe to, we routinely become anti-system, traitors, enemies of the people and eventually objects of public wrath. Jesus never fit together with the system and so are his true followers.
Traditional belief of early church was that unparalleled upswing of evil would characterize the days before the end. Paul employs the vice-list technique that was used widely in Hellenistic Jewish and Greek ethical literature to establish deviance from the values that produce virtue. Elsewhere Paul says that the consciences (organ that regulates human behavior such that faith is translated into appropriate behavior) are seared (1 Tim. 4:1-2)
people will have shameless love for self (corruption) and an obvious lack of control in enjoyment of pleasure. We are all faced by the danger of the decay of our moral instinct. There is more media candy than information, more investment in pleasure than charity, and more heat in sermons than light the result of which is a rotting society.

A preoccupation with the signs of the end is discouraged by Jesus. A preoccupation with the signs increases our potent of becoming self styled prophets, or easy followers of false prophets. By being preoccupied with the signs, we risk abandoning pursuit of life goals. A preoccupation with the signs is an unnecessary distraction. Only a reckless, careless, and a law breaking driver needs to be preoccupied with traffic police.
