PAPER 1 PROMPT IN THIS COURSE, WE HAVE FOCUSED ON COMPARING THE POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC CONDITIONS THAT PRODUCE CONCEPTS AND STRUCTURES OF RACE IN DIFFERENT TIMES AND PLACES. DISCUSS TWO OR THREE CONTEXTS OF RACE COVERED IN OUR JANUARY READINGS (SUCH AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF POLICIES TARGETING AMERICAN INDIANS IN THE US OR AUSTRALIA; THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE IN THE US OR BRAZIL; RACIAL EXCLUSION OF AFRICAN AMERICANS AFTER EMANCIPATION; XENOPHOBIA IN THE US- MEXICO BORDERLANDS; AND THE EMERGENCE OF ASIAN LABOR DIASPORAS IN CALIFORNIA OR ELSEWHERE IN NORTH AMERICA). BE PRECISE ABOUT THE HISTORICAL TIME FRAMES AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS YOU ARE DISCUSSING. ARE PARTICULAR RACIAL GROUPS IMPACTED DIFFERENTLY BY LOGICS OF RACE IN THESE CONTEXTS? IF SO, HOW? WHAT UNDERLYING SOCIAL FORCES (SUCH AS THE DEMAND FOR LAND OR LABOR, STATE POLICIES, OR DYNAMICS OF CLASS AND GENDER) HELP YOU EXPLAIN DIFFERENT LOGICS OF RACE? PLEASE REFERENCE AT LEAST THREE TEXTS WE HAVE READ SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE QUARTER.
PAPER 1 GUIDELINES ARGUMENT: OFFER A CLEAR ARGUMENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PAPER. IT SHOULD DIRECTLY ANSWER THE PROMPT QUESTIONS ABOVE, TYING TOGETHER AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS OF RACE WE HAVE STUDIED. THE PAPER SHOULD HAVE A CLEAR STRUCTURE OF SUPPORTING EVIDENCE AND ANALYSIS TO BUILD ON THE THESIS. THIS SHOULD INCLUDE DIRECT QUOTATIONS FROM AT LEAST THREE OF OUR READINGS; YOU MAY ALSO CITE THE LECTURES. AVOID THE TEMPTATION TO SPEND LARGE PARTS OF THE PAPER SUMMARIZING DETAILS FROM READINGS OR LECTURE; STICK TO A CLEAR ARGUMENT LINE AND ONLY SUMMARIZE WHEN IT PROVIDES DIRECT EVIDENCE FOR YOUR MAIN CLAIMS. THE GOAL IS TO SYNTHESIZE DIFFERENT IDEAS AND HISTORIES WE ARE LEARNING ABOUT INTO YOUR OWN ARGUMENT.
PAPER 1 GUIDELINES SOURCES: YOU ARE DISCOURAGED FROM DOING ADDITIONAL RESEARCH; YOU WILL BE EVALUATED BASED ON YOUR SYNTHESIS AND ANALYSIS OF MATERIAL COVERED IN LECTURE, SECTIONS, AND READINGS. CASUAL, UNCITED APPROPRIATION OF IDEAS FROM WEBSITES OR OTHER SOURCES IS PLAGIARISM, EVEN IF THE IDEAS ARE NOT COPIED WORD FOR WORD. FORMAT: TIMES NEW ROMAN 12 PT, DOUBLE SPACED, 1-IN MARGINS. INCLUDE NAME AND DATE. USE IN-LINE CITATION. LIST WORKS CITED AT THE END (NO NEW PAGE). NO COVER PAGE. PAPER TIPS: SUBMISSION: DUE TH 2/4 AT 930AM ON CANVAS. IF YOU SUBMIT LATE, THERE IS A ONE LETTER GRADE DEDUCTION. NO PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER TH 2/11 AT 930AM. THE WITHDRAW DEADLINE IS 2/16.
