First Five lines of the Poem Dover Beach The sea is calm tonight. The tide is full, the moon lies fair Upon the straits; on the French coast the light Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand, Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay. Explanation: With the above first line, we come to know about night landscape at the bank of Dover Beach. The poet peeps out of where there he can go through the scene at the beach. From where the sea seems calm as there one can feel absolute silence.
Although it is the nature of a sea it has a high tide and the moon at the same time looks very beautiful and fair when it puts it light on the channel. The poet is talking about the same channel which connects the beach with the French coast.
But now the it does not gleam at all but the light which used to appear on the coastal part of French has fade away. But the same time it is going to compare it with the coast of England where the cliff is glimmering and the bay appears quite.
