WHO ARE WE?

PC/PIC – functioning autonomously
Looking at the 3DS- DEATH, DEBT, DISTRESS
Public hearing – facilitate the pandemic and lockdown suppressed voices
Heavily militarised lockdown
The first Public hearing started with a revolutionary message…..

“BOL K LAB AZAD HAI TERE, BOL
ZUBAN KI AB TAK TERI HAI”- FAIZ

SPEAK AS YOUR TONGUE/SOUL IS FREE, AND KEEP SPEAKING AS THE WORDS ARE YOURS
BUT WHY ?

ACCOUNTABILITY, TRUTH AND
JUSTICE

Where was it?
Increased miltarisation
Public health crisis – Law & Order situation
Suspects of Carriers
Covid as an opportunity – for whom?
Dissent?
Inequality, oppression, prejudice

OPPORTUNITY BY A DEMOCRATIC
STATE……

IS THAT IT?

Dilution of FRA – Forest Rights act
Remember the parliament was not able to meet
How did they use social distancing?
Energy Projects – the public hearing where people are to be consulted were taken off
Amendment of Petrochemical industries in Coastal Regulation Zone Area
The list goes on……

MORE THAN HEALTH

How do we look at disaster and climate crisis? – they are inseparable and often we don’t
understand that and treat them in silos
Natural resource based communities being trained to adaptation and mitigating the changes
What people are saying is not just about a certain aspect but if we hear carefully its lot more..
Like the NRBC communities are talking about their dissent, their lands and oceans being
occupied,
autocratic vaccine
But how do we listen? Did people listen?

THE PEOPLE COMMISSION AND
PUBLIC INQUIRY COMMITTEES

INVESTIGATE
Who can investigate?
Reaching out to the people from the prism of truth accountability and justice
Lot of groups in India has moved toward adopting the model of PUBLIC HEARING
Bringing in Peoples truth
Lets look at few instances here……

VACCINE – AUTOCRATIC

Waste pickers were threatened that there bank accounts will be closed if they don’t take the
vaccine – Gharoli, Delhi
“After the vaccine I am not able to work, it has been more than six month now. I am not able
to earn anything”- Women waste picker, from Bhalaswa landfill, Delhi
“We were given vaccines as if were some kind of animal” Forest dependent community,
Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh
“We were told without vaccination certification, we will not be provided with any ration”
Forest Dependent community, Uttar Pradesh

WHAT DO WE DO?

Finding ways to reinvigorate civic participation
Understand India’s context – its not an anti-colonial learning but an anti- caste history
We had the Brahmin hegemony (oppressors) much before the colonial forces were there. It is
not that we learnt much two strands of oppression were functioning parallely
What we see now is subtle ways of oppression
For example – recolonisation of natural resources by global corporates. Who are these global
corporates?
We need strengthening of ideas
Development – as decolonized perspective is heavily problematic

Advocating for social action and justice is crucial in India, where various issues such as accountability, truth, and justice, as well as dissent, inequality, and oppression, are prevalent. The call for accountability is highlighted through the need for public inquiries and commissions to investigate societal challenges. The images represent voices demanding better conditions, autonomous functioning, and a focus on democratic values to address the complexity of social issues. Climate and disaster resilience, community empowerment, and the importance of listening to diverse voices are emphasized in this call to action.

  • Social action
  • Justice advocacy
  • India program
  • Public inquiry
  • Community empowerment
