What a school day will look like in our new normal
Safety and Wellbeing Your safety and wellbeing is a priority. We are all here to help and support you and it is important that you understand that things have changed but there is good reason why. We need you to work with us, speak to us and we will get through this together. There is a complete review of the positive relationships policy. The reflective cycle will not be used. The focus will be on working together, celebrating success through merits and adopting a whole school nurturing approach.
Start of the school day Arrival to school must be as close to 8.40 am as possible. You should remain in the playground area until the 8.45 am bell rings. Make sure that you have breakfast before coming to school. Breakfast arrangements will be in place to support families where this is not possible. If you cycle to school there is an area to leave your bike.
Entering the school S1 Junior entrance S2 Senior entrance S3 Technical entrance S4 New PE/Drama entrance S5/S6 Main entrance You must hand sanitise when you enter the building. There will be staff supervision at the areas. You will then go to registration following the one way system.
Moving around the school There is a one way system in place for corridors and stairs that you must all follow. There are markings on all corridor floors to clearly show you the direction you must be going in. There are signs on the stairwell to show you what stairs are for going up and what ones for going down. At the start of the school day everyone is going up the stairs and at the end of the school day everyone is going down the stairs.
Moving around the school Try and not touch or use the stairwell railings, but if you do then when you arrive at your next class you will hand sanitise or wash your hands. When you leave a classroom at the end of the period you will wipe down your desk and chair, hand sanitise and then the teacher will let you out of class in small groups just before the bell to avoid congestion. You must go straight to your next class and must not wait at other classrooms for friends.
Moving around the school The majority of pupils will use the stairs. There are exceptions as there are children for health/medical reasons need to use the lift. One child and one adult are allowed in the lift at any one time. Face coverings must be used.
Arriving/being in class/leaving class Your teacher will welcome you into class and the first thing you must do is to hand sanitise. If there are sinks in the classroom the teacher may ask you to wash your hands . Every teacher will discuss with your class what will make the class room a safe base. This will be a discussion and agreements made so that everyone understands what is expected. You will be given antiseptic wipes that you will use to wipe down your chair and desk and must hand sanitise before leaving the classroom.
Arriving/being in class/leaving class If you have your own pen/pencil then you will use this but you cannot lend items to friends. Pencils will be issued to you and this will be yours to keep and use in other classes. Teachers will agree with you about the marking and checking of work and explain this system to you.
Toilet facilities During class time if you need to go the toilet then the junior toilets must be used. You must wash your hands and when arriving back in class use the hand sanitiser. Only one pupil from a class will be allowed at any one time. During lunchtime it will be the senior toilets that are in use and the junior toilets will be closed for cleaning. You must wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and take care of the facilities.
Drinking water You should bring water to school. However we do want to limit the number out to the toilets during class. Drinking water will be available in PE and the Medical Room. There will not be water coolers in the school at the moment. You can buy water during lunchtime. The vending machines are not in use.
Canteens The canteens are no longer split by year groups but are split depending on the food that you want. It will be a one way system and the entry and exit doors will be clearly marked. The junior canteen will now be for any children in S1-S6 who want soup, sandwiches and pre-ordered lunches. The senior canteen will now be for any children in S1-S6 who want hot meals or baguettes. It is a cashless system and new machines are in place. Staff will be available to show pupils how to use the machines. All pupils will need their pin or Young Scot Card.
Canteens When you get your food you must leave the canteen and use the outdoor space. The assembly hall will also be made available. These areas will be supervised. Other areas in the school are out of bounds at lunchtime. The Pastoral Care and Support for Learning areas will not be available unless there are exceptional circumstances. This will be discussed with the parent/carer.
Interval/lunchtime You should bring a snack for interval. At lunchtime if you bring a packed lunch you can use the outdoor spaces or the assembly hall. However the number of pupils in the assembly hall will be limited. If you choose to go out for lunch we are setting boundaries: Tesco on the High Road Skate Park Bunkers No further than Stevenston Cross
Timekeeping It continues to be important that you arrive on time in the morning, to classes and after lunchtime. If you are late in the morning you will sign in at the medical room. During meetings with staff we have asked them to monitor timekeeping and if a pattern emerges then either your pastoral care teacher of DHT will contact home to discuss concerns.
Keeping the school and community tidy Use bins to put rubbish in. Hold on to items until you get to a bin. This will be monitored very carefully by staff and the community. This is your community so take pride in it and do not litter.
Fire Evacuation There will not be a planned fire drill due to current circumstances. If the alarm is trigged then you will leave the building at the nearest exit point, the one way system will not apply. When in the play ground area you will see around the fencing including the perimeter fence behind the basketball shoot signs for each register group. When out of the building you will go to the sign that has your register group, line up and a register will be taken.
PE At the moment PE changing rooms will not be used. If you have PE on a particular day then you will come to school dressed for PE. Please note it is white top and black bottoms. ONLY Roll on deodorants to be used. PE activities will take place outside. If it is raining or the weather is poor then classrooms have been identified. S3 and S4 will be working towards a Personal Development award at National 5. S1 and S2 will complete wellbeing curriculum activities
Face coverings Staff have the option of using face coverings and in classrooms this may be the case. This will happen due to the number in the class and if a teacher or member of staff is working with a pupil for a period of time. During the fire evacuation then staff will wear face coverings. If you wish to wear a face covering you can. Please remember it must cover your nose and mouth.
Feeling unwell? There will be posters displayed throughout the school about COVID-19. If you feel unwell then you must report to the medical room however if you have COVID-19 symptoms then you will go in a room next to the medical room and your parent/carer will be called to come and collect you and a test should be requested by your parent/carer. This is not something to joke about and must be taken seriously by all of you.
Extra Curricular Activities At the moment there will not be any clubs at lunchtime or after school. We will keep you updated. You also cannot use classrooms during lunchtime, the only options are outside space or assembly hall.
Hand Sanitiser You must hand sanitise on arrival at school. arriving and leaving a classroom. returning from the toilet but make sure you wash your hands. after interval and lunchtime and before leaving the school at the end of the day. Any issues regarding the sanitiser then your Pastoral Care or DHT must be alerted eg irritation of skin.
