WHY PARTCIPATE IN III? >An essential skill is to be able to ask scientific questions and find the answers to those questions as medicine evolves >Pathways require a scholarship project: RUOP/GHIP or SoD/SoI projects with topics directly related to the Pathway >TRUST students are required to complete RUOP >Participating in III can distinguish you from other residency applicants
HOW AND WHEN WILL I REGISTER? Courses that you will register for to complete the III: > Independent Investigative Inquiry (MEDSCI 501, 6 credits): This is a 1 of 2 hyphenated course to complete your III research, registration will be during the summer 2021. > Independent Investigative Inquiry Final Project (MEDSCI 503, 1 credit): This is a 2 of 2 hyphenated course to wrap up or present your III research. Registration will be during the fall 2021 and will be concluded by turning in your final paper or presenting your research at the poster session.

RURAL UNDERSERVED OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (RUOP-III) > Managed through the Office of Rural Programs > RUOP is a six-week experience in community health, includes a four-week clinical immersion experience > III-3 curriculum focuses on completing an abbreviated community assessment using an asset-based framework

GLOBAL HEALTH IMMERSION PROGRAM (GHIP) > GHIP is an intensive, academically rigorous program to gain a first- hand understanding of the health challenges facing people in low- and middle-income countries > This year we will have a modified GHIP program where medical students will work on a global health related project staying stateside > Participants in the program are matched to a host community in a resource-limited setting abroad and will spend eight weeks working on a health-related project identified by their abroad host community. > This program is administered by the Department of Global Health > Learn more here: https://globalhealth.washington.edu/education- training/medical-students/ghip

GLOBAL HEALTH IMMERSION PROGRAM (GHIP) Currently have 3 partner sites who will host medical students: 1) Dominican Republic 2) Peru 3) Kenya Projects will focus on medical education projects for patients, students, and community health workers UW medical students will work domestically but have weekly/biweekly calls with their host sites to discuss questions, next steps, etc Will turn in a final poster presentation Will receive 2 credits for GH572 (Autumn Quarter) along with your III credits (MEDSCI 501 and 503)

SCHOLARSHIP OF DISCOVERY AND INTEGRATION > Every project must have a Faculty Mentor to support you (if you have a mentor outside of WWAMI, you must have a UWSOM co-mentor) > 30-35 hours per week, 9-week, Summer 2021 research project > You will present a poster of your work at the Medical Student III Poster Session in Fall 2021 at your Foundation Site.

SCHOLARSHIP OF DISCOVERY > If you want to do a project at another Foundations site You may apply for $2650 in relocation funding to move to any other Foundations site for the summer to pursue your project. This may not be used for travel outside the WWAMI region. Only students enrolled in MEDSCI 501 are eligible for moving fund. > If you want to do a project outside of the UWSOM system Let us know as soon as possible about the program you want to apply to so we can adjust your timeline You will need a UWSOM co-mentor You will not receive the WWAMI relocation fund
