325 MHz RF Power Systems Overview
This document provides an overview of the progress and milestones achieved in the development of 325 MHz RF power systems, detailing the design, fabrication, testing, and technical status of 7 kW and 10 kW RF systems. Key milestones, technical schedules, and issues requiring management attention are highlighted, along with insights into the evolution from a 3 kW to a 7 kW Solid State RF Amplifier system. The status of calorimetric measurement of RF power and waveform analysis at 7 kW is also discussed.

325 MHz RF Power (Section 7.1) Manjiri Pande, DAE-SPC Ralph Pasquinelli, Fermilab-SPM IIFC Joint Review Meeting 11-12 July 2016 BARC, Mumbai
Outline Scope of work Status Technical Schedule Issues requiring management attention Technical Schedule Summary
Scope of work 325 MHz RF Power Systems (from Section 7.1 of Joint Project Document) Milestone Major Milestone Quantity Delivery date 1 Design of 325 MHz 7 kW RF System Done Design of 325 MHz, 10 kW RF System Done 2 Fabrication and testing of 8, 7kW, 325 MHz RF System for SSR1 CM at PXIE, Fermilab 8 31 Oct 2017 IIFC Review meeting July 11-12, 2016 RF Power system 325 MHz, 7 kW 3
Milestone 1a Schedule S. No. Major Milestone Qty Delivery date Proposed revised delivery date Design of 325 MHz, 7 kW RF System 2 months after finalization of TRS * 1 Done * * The design was done as per old FRS (dated 9 Dec 2010 but with no TC number) that was provided by Fermilab under the Addendum signed on 22 Aug. 2011. However, this FRS has been revised (TC#0003408) and has been mutually approved on Feb 02, 2016. Status TRS for 325 MHz, 7 kW RF power system has been prepared jointly. It has been discussed mutually and is in final stage of approval. The interface specs are in the TRS and will be incorporated into the final design IIFC Review meeting July 11-12, 2016 RF Power system 325 MHz, 7 kW 4
Earlier Work on 3 kW SSRA at DAE/Fermilab (before JD) A 3 kW Solid State RF Amplifier (SSRA)system was developed based on the old FRS (of Dec. 2010) by DAE and was jointly tested successfully at Fermilab in late 2015. Based on the successful development of the 3 kW system, detailed Technical Requirement Specifications (TRS) of the 7 kW system has been jointly developed and is in the final approval stage.
Technical Status: 7 kW SSRA at DAE (developed as per old FRS) Display of Calorimetric measurement of RF Power RF Power Waveform at 7 kW on spectrum analyzer Sensor data of Calorimetric measurement of RF Power
Milestone 1b S. No. Major Milestone Qty Delivery date Proposed revised delivery date Design of 325 MHz, 10 kW RF System 1 Done * To be discussed Status * Consequent to the increase in the PIP-II beam current from 1 to 2 mA, the power level has to be increased from 10 kW to 20 kW. FRS is not yet finalized and will be based on the revised 7 kW FRS. Increase in the power from 10 to 20 kW will have design, schedule and cost implications which need to be discussed. IIFC Review meeting July 11-12, 2016 RF Power system 325 MHz, 7 kW 7
Milestone 2 Qty Delivery date Proposed revised delivery date S. No. Major Milestone Fabrication and testing of 8, 7kW, 325 MHz RF System for SSR1 CM at PXIE, Fermilab 31 Oct 2017 26 months 2 8 (*) after completion of design (Milestone 1) The completion of this milestone is linked to finalization of TRS of 7 kW RF system. The completion time of 26 months relative to the completion of Milestone 1a (design of 7 kW RF system), is consistent with the schedule given in the JD. (*) Fermilab proposes to increase the number of deliverable systems from 8 to 9. IIFC Review meeting July 11-12, 2016 RF Power system 325 MHz, 7 kW 8
Technical Issues DAE statement: The completion of milestone 1a is linked to finalization of TRS and subsequent design of 7 kW RF system, 26 months after completion of design. Fermilab response: 1st draft of TRS was jointly issued in Jan 2016. A series of modifications and additions have taken place to date and the TRS is in the final stage of approval at BARC. Fermilab comment: A new schedule was discussed with DAE-SPC in Feb 2016 following Point #9 of the meeting notes from the Jan 2016 meeting. December 2017 delivery of 8+1 systems for PIP2IT testing DAE response: It is based on these interactions that the proposed revised delivery dates are being discussed here for approval of the competent authority.
Technical Issues Fermilab comment: A mutually agreed schedule date for delivery of the prototype must be established. Fermilab due to its programmatic requirements would like DAE to meet that schedule. It is essential that a prototype be delivered to Fermilab for testing and integration well before production begins. DAE response: Delay in finalization of TRS by Fermilab has led to a proposed revision in the schedule that DAE will meet. According to the FRS (TC#0003408) testing of first 7 kW amplifier unit will be done in India in presence of FNAL officials. DAE statement: Fermilab proposes to increase the number of deliverable systems from 8 to 9. Fermilab comment: This is because an operational spare will be required for the accelerator prototype at CMTF.
Summary Design (Milestone 1) and development (Milestone 2) of the 325 MHz, 7 kW RF power system is delayed because of changes made by Fermilab to TRS. The modified TRS is in the final stage of approval. Fermilab would like to increase the number of deliverable systems from 8 to 9. Fermilab proposed to increase the power level for the SSR2 amplifiers from 10 to 20 kW. Implications of this change need to be assessed.
