Pronunciation in English refers to the way words are spoken, distinct from accent. We aim to learn Received Pronunciation, the standard British English accent. The science of studying pronunciation is phonetics, which focuses on speech sounds and their classification. English has 44 unique sounds represented by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

  3. 1 - What is Pronunciation? Pronunciation is the way in which a word is pronounced.

  4. 2 - Does pronunciation mean accent? Pronunciation is simply the way a particular letter, word, or sound is uttered. Whereas, accent is a particular way of pronouncing words which is associated with the country, area or social class people come from.

  5. 3- Which pronunciation/accent do we learn? We learn the sort of English used by educated native speakers in south-east England often referred to as RP (Received Pronunciation). It is commonly called BBC English and standard British pronunciation or southern British pronunciation .It is an accent of Standard English in the United Kingdom.

  6. 4- What is the science that studies pronunciation? Phonetics is the science that studies human speech sounds especially those used in speech, and provide methods for their classification, description and transcription

  7. 6- What are the Basic English Sounds? There are forty-four distinctive sounds in the English language: twenty four consonant and twenty vowels. Each sound is represented by a letter of the International Phonetic Alphabet ( IPA). International Phonetic Alphabet ( IPA) refers to a set of arbitrary symbols designed to represent sounds used in all languages of the world.
