DEEP BLUE SEA KEY SCENES
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS Choose a scene or sequence from a film or TV drama which had an impact on you. Briefly describe the events which led to this scene or sequence, then, by referring to appropriate techniques, go on to show how this impact was created.
Choose a sequence from a film which is important both to the atmosphere and to the plot of the film. By referring to appropriate techniques, show how the atmosphere is created in the sequence and go on show how the sequence and the atmosphere are important to the film as a whole.
Choose a film or TV drama which creates suspense or tension either, in a particular scene or throughout the whole film or TV drama. By referring to appropriate techniques, show how the suspense or tension is created and how it affects your enjoyment of the film or TV drama as a whole.

SEQUENCE 1 SUSPENSE/TENSION/DRAMA 1. Storm approaching lightning + thunder + dark clouds + huge waves 2. Radar screen shows huge storm and Aquatica in the middle of it 3. Carter in the tunnel sharks attacking tunnel (synchronised) - sharks recognising the gun - - sharks swimming backwards - - sharks biting the cameras
4. Carter leaves the tunnel: murky water which means you cannot see what is in the water - wet lab loses radio contact with Carter - Carter manages to drug the shark and bring it to the wet lab 5. Is the experiment going to work? 6. Jim s arm being bitten off
CAMERA WORK 1. Wide shots at the beginning of the sequence: highlights Aquatica s isolation highlights the storm approaching (physical + metaphorical) 2. Camera shot from the shark s point of view outside of tunnel as it is trying to chase Carter builds tension
3. Close up shots of all the characters faces when they are carrying out the experiment builds tension 4. Slow motions shots when Jim s arm is bitten off builds tension +creates drama
Characterisation Hero vs villain Carter Blake = hero Dr. Susan McAlester = villain
Carter is clearly the hero : he leaves the safety of the tunnel and manages to get the shark to the wet lab he stays in the water with the shark he is brave and manages to save people when they fall into the water. He knows that the shark that bites off Jim s arm should be killed.
Susan is more complicated. Even though she is trying to do the right thing (cure Alzheimers) she can seen to be a villain: She and Jim abuse genetic engineering and increase the sharks brains in order to get more protein She causes Jim to be badly hurt She lets the shark escape
SPECIAL EFFECTS 1.SHARKS!!! underwater when Carter is in the tunnel the shark in the wet lab Are they realistic? 2. Jim s attack Lots of very red fake blood Stump where Jim s arm has been bitten off - gory White tiled floor which highlights the blood because of the contrast The amount of blood and the colour of it is quite over the top
Dialogue Welcome to my parlour. Susan What in God s creation? Oh not his .ours. Russell Jim She s sleeping like a baby. Carter Bad dream? Carter What we re looking for here, is lightning in a bottle. Susan You did it pal. Jim

SEQUENCE 2 Drama/tension Trying to evacuate Jim As helicopter is approaching Aquatica the scene is apocalyptic Massive storm, waves crashing, spotlights The helicopter looks barely in control shaking Carter etc manage to get Jim to sea level but it looks like the end of the world How are they going to save Jim? Trying to get Jim winched up to the helicopter
Winch makes terrible noise and it starts to smoke Winch breaks, pilot slashes his hand, Jim falls into the ocean Something underwater grabs Jim and starts pulling the helicopter Helicopter crashes into Aquatica massive explosion and destruction Jim is seen in the shark s mouth and is thrown into the underwater glass screen Screen breaks and Aquatica is flooded
Camera Work Wide camera shots helicopter approaching Aquatica Lots of close up shots of Jim as he is being winched up to the helicopter he is desperate to be saved Close up of Jim s face as he falls into the ocean Wide shots of explosions fire seems to be coming out of the cinema screen at the viewer
Special Effects As helicopter approaches Aquatica - massive storm, waves crashing etc Helecopter crashing massive explosions Shark with Jim in his mouth Jim is still alive does this look realistic? Sound of Jim breathing Glass cracking Aquatica being flooded

KEY SEQUENCE 3 PREACHER IN THE CORRIDOR PREACHER IN THE KITCHEN DEATH OF THE FIRST SHARK

Drama/suspense Previously viewer has seen shark fin in water going into the facility and the corridors Preacher is in builds suspense. Lights flickering on and off in the corridor builds tension.
First part of the sequence The audience see the shark approaching Preacher from behind the shark is moving slowly/calmly builds tension. The shark powers through the water towards Preacher Preacher hides in the flooded kitchen. Preacher is holding a frying pan to protect himself humour.
The sharks fin passes right by Preacher, on the other side of glass. Has the shark gone? Preacher holds onto the cross around his neck symbolism.
Second part of the sequence As Preacher climbs the shelves to get out of the water, the audience sees the kitchen doors open. Has the shark swum into the kitchen? Tension builds. First jump-scare parakeet flies into Preacher s face Preacher tries to get his bird to fly off the saucepan in the water tension.
Second jump-scare shark jumps out of the water and eats the bird. Preacher is now in the water with the shark! Shark frantically chases Preacher. Preacher has to hide in the oven.
Third part of the sequence While the shark keeps bashing into the oven, it switches on the gas. Preacher has to escape to the top part of the oven, using an axe. Builds tension. Just as the shark breaks into the oven, Preacher manages to escape. Preacher dives over the shark.
Shark turns round and starts to chase Preacher. Preacher flicks his lighter and throws it towards the shark. The gas lights and the whole room explodes. The shark dies! Reference to first Jaws film. In that film the shark is blown up.
Camera Shots First part of the sequence Close up shot of shark powering through water towards Preacher. Shark sPOV of swimming past the doors of the kitchen where Preacher is hiding.
Second part of the sequence Underwater shots of Preacher in the water is something else in the water? Shaky camera shot of Preacher sPOV represents how scared he is. Underwater shots of Preacher in the water after he falls off the shelves.
Third part of the sequence When Preacher is in the oven - Close up shots of the shark lots of teeth! - POV shots of the shark attacking the oven. Preacher escapes - Slow motion shot of lighter being thrown into the air. Kitchen and shark blow up wide shot of fire coming out towards audience.
Special Effects Lots of close up views of the shark. Shark eating the bird. Explosion. Are the effects realistic?
Dialogue I appreciate the irony Lord. Cook dies in his own oven. But I ve got other plans! You ate my bird!
Characterisation The only character in this sequence is Preacher. What type of character is he? Give examples from the clip.
