  1. Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan VOCABULARY

  2. Directions: Write the definition of each word on the lines provided to the right of each vocabulary word.

  3. shabby adjective Ragged or showing wear and tear

  4. Sample Sentence: She didn t care that her mother s wedding dress was yellowed and shabby; she planned to wear it at her wedding anyway.

  5. appalling Adjective Shocking or horrifying

  6. APPALLING: The most appalling part of the assembly was when the student threw a wad of chewed gum at the stage.

  7. clamor Noun Loud noise or shouting

  8. CLAMOR: The students jumped at the clamor of lockers shutting outside the room during their test.

  9. despair Noun Hopeless -ness

  10. DESPAIR: Victor hung his head in despair after blurting out Teresa in English class.

  11. murmur Verb To mumble or grumble

  12. MURMUR: His mother sent him to his room after he murmured something disrespectful to her under his breath.

  13. grimace Verb To make a face of disgust or disapproval

  14. GRIMACE: She grimaced at the idea of another girl taking her place as goalie, and scowled at her from across the gym.

  15. astonished Adjective Surprised or amazed

  16. ASTONISHED: We were astonished that someone would leave us a chest full of chocolate bars and cheered in glee.
