  2. Today we will learn: Mastering Contractions in English

  3. What are contractions? Contractions are shorter ways of tying two words together. They use an apostrophe ( ) to show where the letter or letters are missing.

  4. *Examples* Do + not = don t Can + not = can t I + am = I m You + are = you re

  5. How do contractions work? A verb (an action word) + not, am/is/are, or have/has. The missing letter or letters are usually from the second word.

  6. Eat Drink Cry Skip Pull Push Fetch Give Make Bake Try Bring Teach Common Action Verbs Run Walk Jump Talk Sing Speak

  7. *Examples* Can t = can + not. The apostrophe replaces the o in not.

  8. Common Contractions They re (they are) Isn t (is not) Wasn t (was not) Haven t (have not) Let s (let us) Don t (do not) Can t (can not) I m (I am) You re (you are) He s (he is) She s (she is) We re (we are)
