What Is Biotechnology?

Definition:
Biotechnology is the study of technology based on biology
Biotechnology uses living organisms and molecular biology to produce
healthcare-related products
Involves understanding how living organisms function
Biotechnology combines these studies of biology, physics, chemistry,
mathematics, science and technology
Biotechnologists study the physical, chemical, and genetic characteristics of cells
and tissue while explore industrial applications for them
Careers in Biotechnology:
Biomedical Engineer, Bio-Mechanical Engineer, Biomed Field Service
Engineer, Genetics Counselor, Biophysicists & Biochemists, etc...

Biotechnology At YWLA

Biotechnology is a STEM-based pathway offered at YWLA.
Students affiliated with biotechnology will take rigorous
courses such as Principles of Bioscience, Biotechnology I,
Biotechnology II, and Practicum in STEM Biotechnology.
Students will learn the basics of microbiology,
bioprocessing, genetic engineering, and biotechnology
careers (especially biotechnology in the medical field.)
Students will engage in hands-on, experiment-based labs
and field-based exploration enhancing their learning of
biotechnology.

Student Timeline as a Biotechnology Student at YWLA

Freshman Year:
Students enroll in their CTE
required course Principles of
Bioscience
Students are required to
finish all their certifications
in this year
OSHA, Cyber Safety,
WFR Employability, and
WFR Customer Service.

Sophomore Year:
Students enroll in their CTE
required course
Biotechnology I
This year biotech students
will focus more on field
investigation, and how
organisms interact when
located in different
environments.
No certifications taken this
year.

Student Timeline as a Biotechnology Student at YWLA

Junior Year:
Students enroll in their CTE
required course Advanced
Biotechnology II
Project based year. Similar
to sophomore year, but it is
much more heavy based on
thorough research and
genetic information.

Senior Year:
During senior year, students
will take part of their
Practicum in STEM
Biotechnology and be able to
take part in internships.
Students also finalize their
certifications in:
Lab Technician, CPR,
HIPAA, and OSHA
Healthcare.

Biotechnology is the application of technology based on biology, utilizing living organisms and molecular biology to create healthcare products. It involves studying the functionality of living organisms by combining biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and technology. Careers in biotechnology include biomedical engineering, genetic counseling, and more. At YWLA, students participate in a STEM-based pathway focusing on rigorous courses in biotechnology, microbiology, genetic engineering, and practical applications in the field. The student timeline outlines the academic progression in biotechnology at YWLA from freshman to senior year.
