  1. The 10 Commandments The 10 Commandments Keep God s Day Special (Lesson 11) Exodus 20 v 8 Matthew 12:1-14

  2. The 10 Commandments The 10 Commandments Keep God s Day Special Keep God s Day Special Memory verse: Exodus 20 v 8 Remember the Sabbath say by keeping it Holy In this lesson we look at how obedience to the 4thcommandment is illustrated by the teaching and conduct of Jesus. There are four parts to the lesson: The 4thCommandment Jesus explains Do good and worship The Lord s day As always, say a prayer before you begin the lesson, asking that God would help you to learn something today which will help you be more like Jesus.

  3. Keep Gods Day Special Keep God s Day Special To start: If you have the space, have a short competition to see who can do the most star jumps or speed bounces in 20 seconds. Now try and do the same exercise until you need to take a rest. If I asked you to keep going and never take a rest what would you think?. Our lesson today is about the 4thcommandment where God instructs us to rest and keep the Sabbath day (for Christians a Sunday) holy (this means set apart or special or different).

  4. Keep Gods Day Special : the 4 Keep God s Day Special : the 4th thCommandment Commandment Read Exodus 20:8-11 God made the world in six days and on the seventh day he rested. When he provided manna in the desert for the Israelites he told them to collect twice as much on the 6th day so they could have a rest on the 7thday. If it is possible, we should try to stop our normal work and other activities that would stop us from making Sunday a holy day. This isn t always possible but sometimes it is.

  5. Keep Gods Day Special Keep God s Day Special We need to have a day when we can worship God together, learn more about Him and sing His praises; Sunday is the main day for Christians to do this. Sunday is God s present to us. During lockdown we haven t been able to do many of the activities on Sunday we would normally do (including attending church!). Have a think, after lockdown is there something you might start doing or do more or stop doing or do less on a Sunday?

  6. Keep Gods Day Special : Jesus Explains Keep God s Day Special : Jesus Explains Read Matthew 12: 1-8 Around the time of Jesus, the Jewish leaders (Pharisees) had made lots of laws about what you couldn t do on a Sabbath. One Sabbath, Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield. His disciples were hungry , so they picked some corn and ate it. The Pharisees saw this and told Jesus that it was against the rules of the Sabbath.

  7. Keep Gods Day Special : Jesus Explains Keep God s Day Special : Jesus Explains Jesus disagreed. He reminded them of when King David and his men were hungry on the Sabbath. They went into the temple and took some bread that was for the priests. He reminded them that priests work on the Sabbath. In both cases something more important than the Sabbath took priority; David and his men s needs and the priest s temple work. Jesus is greater than the temple and Lord of the Sabbath, the Sabbath is about him!

  8. Keep Gods Day Special : Jesus Explains Keep God s Day Special : Jesus Explains Something greater than the Temple is here. If only you understood what God meant when He said, I desire mercy, not sacrifice , (Hosea 6:6) you would not be accusing the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. Talk about how we might sometimes make God s special day about rules instead of about Jesus. This might be a good time to chat with an older person asking what Sundays were like for them when they were growing up - ask your parents permission of course. (This week I ll post something on facebook and ask other people in the church for their comments look out for that!)

  9. Keep Gods Day Special: Do Good and Worship Keep God s Day Special: Do Good and Worship Matthew chapter 12: 9 Matthew chapter 12: 9- -14 14 Jesus said it s better to help people on the Sabbath than to say you can t because you re having a rest! One Sabbath when Jesus was in the synagogue, the Pharisees set a trap. They showed him a man who had a withered hand and asked him if it was lawful to heal him.

  10. Keep Gods Day Special: Do Good and Worship Keep God s Day Special: Do Good and Worship Matthew chapter 12: 9 Matthew chapter 12: 9- -14 14 Jesus told them that if one of their sheep fell in a pit on the Sabbath they would rescue it! But a man is more valuable than a sheep! Jesus healed the man s hand . What is the point that Jesus is making?

  11. Keep Gods Day Special Keep God s Day Special Matthew chapter 12: 9 Matthew chapter 12: 9- -14 14 Jesus showed that on our day of rest it is right to help people and do good. When we rest from our normal work we have time for God and others. Perhaps you could do something today to cheer up someone in our church or your family who is unwell or needing encouraged. Ask an adult to look at Central s closed facebook page and see if there is someone you could make a card or a picture or a letter for and send it to them. 12. Keep Gods Day Special Keep God s Day Special The Lord s Day The Lord s Day When the Israelites were given the Sabbath, the 7thday was Friday evening to Saturday evening. When Jesus came, he died on the Friday and was buried. He was in the tomb on Saturday but rose from the dead on Sunday, the first day of the week (John 20: 1-9). For this reason, the early church used to meet on a Sunday the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). That s why we try to keep Sunday special. We call it the Lord s Day.

  13. Keep Gods Day Special Keep God s Day Special The Lord s Day The Lord s Day The Sabbath rest was made by God for man. He gave it to us for our benefit because he cares about us. He wants us to take time out from our busy lives. That doesn t mean being worshipping God, learning His word to make us strong and blessing others. During this week make plans to make Sunday 2ndMay a bit special lazy! It means

  14. Keep Gods Day Special Keep God s Day Special Close today s lesson with a prayer thanking God for Sundays and special times to think about Him. As things are a bit different just now in our world let s ask God to help people in our church who are trying to make Sunday a special day for us all. We finish with a song which I came across last week. It s called Just The Way God Wanted Us To Be by Sovereign Grace music God Bless , Colin
