Explore the research legacy and community engagement initiatives in the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) domain. Discussions focus on continuing projects, priorities for future research, and collaboration opportunities linked to knowledge gaps. Key themes include community benefits, applied utility of products, ongoing initiatives, and the urgent need for action for sustainable impact across sessions.

  1. Charge to Round-Robin Topical Breakouts 1) Science lessons learned during ABoVE (Center Auditorium): What are the top-level highlights of our science? What are the most impactful advances? First 20-Minute Session Last Name 1 A-D 2) Infrastructure lessons learned during ABoVE (South Auditorium): What have we learned about running coordinated field campaigns, data management, logistics across institutions, and keeping investigators safe? What is the relevance to current scoping studies and future campaigns? 2 E-I 3 J-M 4 N-S 5 T-Z Second rotation suggestions: Session Number +1, stay in your first session, or move based on interest 3) Knowledge gaps (Room 2126): What are the key remaining knowledge gaps? What did we miss, not do well, or were unable to address? 4) Engaging and collaborating with communities, land managers, and decision-makers (Room 2603): How can we make our science more inclusive and impactful? How can we connect earlier with potential users? How can we engage together as a Science Team, not just in individual projects? How can we begin an equitable spin-down of existing collaborations? 5) Research legacy in the ABoVE Domain (Room 2607): What are the continuing projects post-ABoVE, priorities for follow-on research, links back to knowledge gaps?

  2. Research legacy in the ABoVE domain: What are the continuing projects post-ABoVE, priorities for follow-on research, links back to knowledge gaps? Discussions categorized under four overlapping themes Community benefits Applied utility of products and insight Ongoing initiatives with current or developing collaborations (and data) ABoVE and beyond Urgent need for action under all themes

  3. Research legacy in the ABoVE domain: What are the continuing projects post-ABoVE, priorities for follow-on research, links back to knowledge gaps? Community benefits (refer to other sessions notes too) Compile ABoVE one-page summaries and maps Story maps, workshops Wetland mapping for community access, Guardians program for field validation (N. French et al.) Indigenous knowledge hubs across Arctic (considering capacity) Something like IPCA Knowledge Basket How can these types of systems be supported by ABoVE? Legacy demonstrates the need for these indigenous knowledge hubs

  4. Research legacy in the ABoVE domain: What are the continuing projects post-ABoVE, priorities for follow-on research, links back to knowledge gaps? Applied utility of products and insight Knowledge exchange targeted for knowledge holders and decision makers Indigenous groups (e.g., governments, wildlife management boards) National Parks summaries and other resources Resources for US/CAN Parks, Alaska Fire Science Consortium, (Yukon Flats) fire management strategies Polling for insight feedback from user groups regarding most useful products generated feedback from researchers regarding tangible products for current needs Visuals including maps and interactive products (for visitor centers) Movie Compile data products in accessible formats and platforms Compile recommendations for sensor development and deployment based on what we ve learned

  5. Research legacy in the ABoVE domain: What are the continuing projects post-ABoVE, priorities for follow-on research, links back to knowledge gaps? Ongoing initiatives with current or developing collaborations (and data) The research will go on, climate and landscape change is kicking off across the domain AVIRIS-NG DOC mapping Post-disturbance succession review Inundation products for GSL area (N. French et al.) Carbon inventory maps Active layer thickness, thaw vulnerability maps (peat maps being worked up for Canada) Applied research themes Prescribed burning and what it does to species compositions (e.g., does burning increase or decrease shrub cover?) Vegetation change in context of changing wildlife habitat (e.g., caribou) Recruitment failure of black spruce at different scales. What s up with post-fire succession? Updated products (e.g., for wildlife managers) Model forecast of habitats (e.g., shrub, fuel load, thermokarst) 1-page summaries of ABoVE accomplishments Pubs, data, how/who is using products, ecosystem services Removable ABoVE tattoos (Peter Nelson s idea)

  6. Research legacy in the ABoVE domain: What are the continuing projects post-ABoVE, priorities for follow-on research, links back to knowledge gaps? ABoVE and beyond How do we maximize the resources and momentum to meet the needs of the changing north? Identify sites and projects where sustained airborne campaigns should continue Poll participants/end users Priorities for collaboration Future plans will you be continuing work in ABoVE sites? Priorities in the event of future airborne campaigns Continued funding from other sources Arctic COLORS, FORTE, ROSES (Ryan to explain more here) Align with other funding opportunities (e.g., ArcticNet in Canada, NEON, LTER NSF) Align with future NASA missions Ensuring ABoVE remains a hub ABoVE legacy meetings or AGU sessions? Email updates of legacy work Updated products on ORNL DAAC Continued working group meetings (e.g., veg disturbance) Wikipedia page? (Links to one-page summaries) Transition of ABoVE site to legacy mode Documenting the history of ABoVE Reflections from ABoVE The family tree ABoVE Record of ABoVE interactions and initiatives (video??), contributions from participants Graphical novel Smithsonian travelling exhibit (more like that) Permanent tattoos
